Hi there,

I have been messing about with this m/b for about a week now trying to get the sound to work, but no matter what I do I get the same Error Message when I try and install the drivers. Message is:

--
The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.

Note: If you installed audio software without restarting your PC, restart now, then run this setup again.
--

So far I have:

-Got and tried latest drivers of Asus and also other known driver sources
-Flash m/b bios to latest version
-Tried with front panel connected and disconnected
-Checked the sound is enabled in Bios
-Tried to install manually through Add New Hardware

All without any success. It does actually look like the OS is not even detecting the audio adaptor at all.

System:

Antec Fusion MATX MediaCenter Case - Aluminium Front Bezel with 430W PSU
Asus A8V-VM Socket 939 VIAKM890 M-ATX Green VGA Sound Lan USB 2.0 FSB 1000 SATA 133
Kingston 512MB DDR PC3200 400MHz CL3 Memory Module
Seagate 200GB SATAII/300 7200rpm 8MB Cache - OEM
Asus Nvidia 7300GS 256MB PCI-E

Can anyone help?

:p yeah i am pretty sure... the big letters on the box kinda gave it away :)

Anyway, I ran that prog just to be sure no weird stuff was goin on and it did recognise it as an A8V-VM.

So in the mean time i have got a replacement board in (same model) and i have the same problem! It just dosn't even recognise the sound at all. No prompts in Windows, nothing in Device Manager.

Do you think it may need the front panel connecting? It does not have any jumpers on the audio connectors as I expected.

Its driving me mad!

Just to get the basic onboard working you shouldn't have to connect anything (other than the speaker cable to the appropriate I/O port obviously). I suppose its possible that there is a jumper but as that would be going backwards, there should only be an option in the BIOS.

One thing I did notice is that there are now two new versions of the A8V-VM that use the Realtek ALC660 or the ALC653, if the drivers your supposed to be using don't work, what the hey:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#AC
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=3&GetDown=false#High Definition Audio Codecs

Make sure you don't have any other missing drivers though btw, since codecs have to interface through the board they could hinder it being detected.

You generally do need to jumper 2 pins on the sound header to get any sound out if the front panel is not connected. There is a further wrinkle here in that many cases now have two sound header connectors - one for AC '97 audio and one for HD Audio. If you use the wrong one all sorts of weird things happen.

Afaik if you don't connect anything to the front/system panel connectors then you won't get a beep at post but the onboard will still work fine. The additional header on the A8V-VM is for the HD audio I/O but if it is not connected then the 3 ports on the back I/O function as normal.

As I understand it, it thinks the headphones are plugged in at the front so it disables the speakers hence no sound comes out.

Either I'm confused or you are, I'm talking about the same collection of pins that controls the power sw, ide led etc, where the case speaker is connected up. If that isn't connected then you don't get anything from the case speaker (like the post beep) but the onboard sound still works through the rear I/O.

I dunno what your referring to here, that board has a header to enable the onboard sound? Didn't see anything in the manual other than connecting up the HD audio required the HD I/O panel to be plugged into the HD audio header on the board (same with the S/PDIF). It has Line In/Mic/Line Out on the rear mobo I/O for AC97.
