keep trying and get this coming up every time

Close Windows installation and contact the device manufacturer for updated driver software for these devices:
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller

tried doing what it said but nothing works, any ideas?

Make sure the sata mode is IDE in the bios(i think he means)
If your running raid then you will need drivers before it installs.

in the bios the onboard sata/ide device and control mode are set to enabled and IDE already

and sata raid/ahci mode is disabled

any other ideas?

I see, you are trying to install it on an existing hard drive?

That doesnt work depending on how your existing drive is formatted to (NTFS/FAT32) I remember I bought a new HD, formatted in it XP, but when I went to install Vista on it, it wouldn't detect it!

The only way around it, was to 'pretend' to install XP (get to the format stage, let it format, then restart PC and install Vista instead)

If I were you mate, try and back the stuff up and install fresh onto the drive, it's always best to install an OS on a freshly formatted drive.

Or if you don't want to back up because of time etc, buy another HD (they are cheap as chips these days) and install it on that and just copy the data over in your own time (and then sell that original drive if you wanted!)

Thats your problem mate.
Put the new vista divers on a floopy and get vista to load them.
there is an option for this.

Also have you got just one partion i.e c:

My bad dude.
Just saw your mobo. I have a P35 DS4 and Vista installs no probs.

In the bios were the IDE/SATA options are, are the first top 3 options disabled?
I cant restart mine to look(soz) you dont need drivers unless you have raid.

So my guess is one of the options in the bios is wrong.
You could load default settings in the bios and try that(not the optimize ones)

The only othe thing I can think of is a bios update(unless you already have)
Have you loaded defaults in the bios?

I have googled but cant find much at all sorry.
