Can't install Windows on SSD

This is a bit strange and has happened once to my before but can't remember how I got around it.
New SSD with latest firmware.
Boot from win7 DVD.
When I get to the part where I am asked where to install windows I get a message that I cannot install in the ssd. The SSD is recognised in disk manager when I boot with my other disk.
Have formated the SSD, deleted and recreated partitions etc but no success. Haven't tried to write anything on the SSD yet but don't think there will be an issue as I can see the new SSD (has letter assigned too).

Any ideas?

Tried with both AHCI and IDE mode

have you unplugged the other hdd's so just the ssd is installed? and running latest mb bios?

What board are you using? Is the SSD connected to the native southbridge controller or an add on one?

It is a laptop.
Only DVD and SSD (and a Flash card which I forgot about and removed it now).

Doing a full format of the ssd (not a quick one - know it is not good for an SSD but want to be sure there is nothing left behind)

You've gotta have AHCI selected in the BIOS.

If you don't do it on a regular basis there is no problem.

Worked at the end. It was either the flash card that should have been removed from the card reader or the non-quick format.
