Right... My google foo has failed me. I'm trying to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 to an old computer, but it's having none of it. The fail codes are pretty generic, 0x80070570 being the usual one. I can only get into the actual installation of windows by loading into safe mode on 32bit, but even then it fails on me. Trying to install off of an official USB drive.

The system is :
q6600
8GB RAM (only have 2gb in at the mo)
hd6950
Single 60GB SSD

Nothing else is installed/connected. I've run memtest and thats fine, and tried it in multiple ram slots. Different HDDs have been tried. I suppose the next test would be to download and create a new boot drive?

Any ideas would be useful.

So far I have:
Used different drives,
Used different Hard drives
Used different USB ports
Tried 4 different ram sticks in all 4 slots
Tries installing both 64 and 32 versions
Only the 32 version will get anywhere in safe mode, 64 wont take it at all.

I haven't tried a different USB stick which is my next move.
The computer will run Ubuntu though, which I thought weird.

Is this with a fresh ISO from the Windows 10 creation tool? Tried using rufus with partition scheme set as MBR for legacy?

I installed Windows 10 Pro 64 bit on a HP DC5800 with a Q6600 and 8GB a few days ago. USB stick created using the creation tool in the normal way. No problems with the install.

I've installed Windows 10 a few Core2 generation machines over the last few months. None of them needed any special steps.

My mate has just had the same issue where he tried installing from an official Windows 10 usb stick and it refused to do anything, some kind of ndis.sys error. In the end I downloaded the media creation tool off the Microsoft website, burned him the dvd version and worked like a charm.

when you get to the drive choice option in windows set up. delete all drives and ask windows to set up the drive for install.

windows should setup 3 partitions, but a lot of the time it wont, you have to keep deleting them until windows stops been a nob and sets up the drives right or any install will fail. there is no way to make windows do this and there is no way to setup the partitions yourself you just have to keep rebooting until the system decides to make them.

in my experience this is the main reason for windows 10 no installing on old systems. unplugging all drives other than the os drive can help

Where exactly does the installer crash? Have you tried installing a different version of Windows (7 or 8)?. Have you checked the memory with Memtest? What motherboard is it and which BIOS? Have you tried resetting the BIOS?

When creating a bootable USB with Rufus, the second option to choose is Partition scheme and target system type
It has to be the same as the previous Windows installations on the same SSD.

So, must be some incompatibility between the BIOS, the SSD and the USB install drive.

1. Try to create another USB drive checking both options for Partition scheme and target system type.
2. Try to install the same Windows that you know had worked on the same computer previously and then update it to Windows 10.

edit: about error code 0x80070570, read possible causes there: http://www.eassos.com/how-to/fix-error-code-0x80070570.php

Oh, and install all your RAM - it isn't the memory.
