I have windows 7 on my machine and i put an old hard drive that was in a xp machine into it as a slave and windows sees the files ok but i dont have permission to open them and all i want to do is copy the my pictures files over, i have read various things on the web about this but i am getting nowhere

Can anyone tell me what the easiest way to do this please ?

Right click on the file then select the bottom option "Properties". Select the "Security" tab and make sure your user has permission to read it.

i have done this and it still wont let me open or move the files , is it because it has xp on this hd as well ?
Sorry for sounding i noob but this is driving me mad

you could try setting permissions for 'Everyone' on the files:

right click the folder in question
security tab
click the Edit button
click the Add button
in the box type Everyone and click OK
Select Everyone so it is highlighted in the 'Group or user names' box
in the 'Permissions for Everyone' section at the bottom put a tick in Full control
click Apply
click OK

now see if you can move them
