Any ideas what is going on here - it's driving me crazy. Sometimes it works, but very rarely.

I take a photo using the camera and try to send it to my wife using the imessage. It fails. Yet I can send the same photo to my sister in law fine using imessage.

We both have iphone 4 with the latest official software.

Are you using the same iTunes account on both?

My imessage is also strange at times, sometimes it sends messages that I send from my phone as from my email address and not my number!

As territt said, it may be something to do with the same itunes account.

Yes because iMessage identifies the phone via your registered iTunes email address, this would appear to explain why you can send to your sister inlaw.

Having said that, you can set your phone and her phone to identify themselves via the phone number.

Check Settings > Messages > Receive At > Caller ID > Check off Phone Number

Failing that I don't know, hope this helps.

EDIT:

I've got an iPad/iPhone, both run off he same account but the iPad defaults to [Caller ID > Email] and the phone is [Caller ID > Number]. I think you can get this fixed.

Cheers Mitzy. I've just checked those settings. It was saying received at 2 addresses, so I unchecked the phone number and selected my email address. So with my wife's phone I do the opposite yeah?

I don't really understand why that would make the difference.

On her phone add her email address then remove the apple I'd email that you share, that make sense?

Lovely. Understood. I'll give it a try when she is back from work. Thanks. Does that mean we can both separately use the cloud for sharing of contacts and stuff?

From what I understand, iMessage doesn't need to have the Apple ID associated in the receive at address so sorry for the confusion.

In the iMessage Caller ID bit have the phone numbers selected on both phones, this setting is a bit misleading as it really dictates how your iMessages show to someone else. If you have your number selected your iMessages appear to come from a mobile number, if you have an email address selected then they show from that email address in the recipients end.

So this is what should work.

Your phone Recieve at Apple ID email and number.

Her phone Recieve at her email address and number.

Great. You can ignore my latest blurb then, but do look at the caller ID settings again, couple of mates have theirs set up Caller ID > email so when they IMessage me it appears from an email, bit weird.

No, the cloud stuff works though the apple ID unless someone wants to correct me. :)

You want the iMessage Caller ID on both phones to be the phone number. Then make sure you're sending the message to her phone number.

If it's still being funny, you can set each phone to receive on your personal email address (assuming you both have separate emails that aren't your Apple ID). Set the Caller ID to the unique address and try sending the iMessage to her email.

Failing all of the above, you can use a different Apple ID for iMessage while keeping both phones on the same Apple ID for the App Store.

[edit] Took my time typing it seems ;)

You can use separate Apple IDs for the iCloud features, iMessages and the App Store.

So you could share one for iCloud stuff (contacts, calendars, etc), have separate ones for iMessages, and share one for the App Store :)
