Can't sleep, and have given up. What do you do when you can't sleep?

Hi guys, not a thread for the sake of a thread, genuinely curious as to what you do to help yourself get off to sleep when you are struggling.

I had been trying to sleep since midnight, and because of a combination of things (tickling cough, a-lot of stuff on my mind, heat, noise from the fan, excessive sleep last night) I couldn't even get comfortable let alone get close to sleeping...

Tried turning off the fan and throwing the windows open instead, cough syrup for the throat, tried playing quiet music to give me something other than my thoughts to focus on, even tried drinking some spiced warm milk & rum to make myself drowsy, none of which worked...

So I will now sit here for the next 4 hours at my PC, until I leave for work at 8... Then I guess I'll sleep for an hour or two after work.

What is this sleep?

Fortunately don't have a problem getting off to sleep generally, bigger problem that I simply don't have a sleeping pattern :S

EDIT: Thats actually not entirely true I don't usually have a problem getting off to sleep if I stick to whatever sleeping pattern my body has decided to go with this week but I can't force myself to sleep earlier.

I cannot recall the last time I couldn't sleep.

One night isn't a biggy though. Just have a nice cold shower and a few cups of tea or coffee before you leave for work.

Could always try guided relaxation/meditation videos on youtube or delve into the murky world of ASMR.

Spending time on OcUK probably doesn't help as nice bright blue light tends to work against the natural progression towards a sleepy state for the night.

I generally get to the stage where I realise I'm just not that tired, so get up and do something productive.

Like someone said, one night of little sleep isn't going to have that big an effect unless you're lounging around the next day.

Well I work in an office, so the only "activity" I do throughout my day is getting up once or twice for a 15 minute walk to stretch my legs, and walking to and from the coffee machine/toilet occasionally. :p

Woke up at 3am this morning with a combination of cold coming on, way to hot, and full bladder. Fortunately I'm on leave today so don't have to go in but I am likely to be a bit ratty all day.

What I have been doing ... Reading email, catching up on forums, looking up a few things for some stuff I need to do today etc on my tablet whilst wishing that I was tired enough to go back to sleep ....

Strange that I've had a similar night

Usually don't struggle to sleep.

When I get this way on the rare occasion I usually go get a slice or two of toast and a drink and put a film on usually fall asleep that way

Still can't sleep so I have given up

How often are you at the coffee machine?

If wide awake, as opposed to restless, I go and read any nonsense on wikipedia/nonsense fluff and just follow link upon link. Usually after an hour or so I can get back to sleep for an hour or two if from 3/4am. If after 5am I pull a face and start making the coffees in the resigned knowledge that this day is going to be pants.

I usually wash any rouge cups or glasses from previous evening mess about in the kitchen (Kitchen is in extension so not likely for sound to carry and wake my husband up!). If still not sleepy read the internet cursing the fact I can`t sleep.

Just got up usually up earlier , something for you guys that don't get much sleep to try ZMA supplements they won't help you sleep any better but you "feel" more rested when you wake up so say i've only had 4 hours sleep it feels like ive had a quality 7

Literally just ran out of my bottle last night :(

Most of the time i'll just sit on the pc browsing forums/youtube if i can't sleep!!!

Looking at a computer screen is the worst thing you can do if you're trying to sleep, likewise a mobile device.

Read a book, crack one off then try again. I dont know why you're too hot though, summer has gone :p
