Hello,I put my PC togecther yesterday, the screen will come on if I use an adapter that came with the GPU that fits into the GPU and you attach an VGA cable to the adapter and the screen comes on, however when I plug the VGA cable into the motherboards slot the screen wot come on.

Do I need to update the drivers or something first?

the MOBO is asrock z77 extreme 4

any help appreciated

If its a DVI-D port on the motherboard then it only carries a digital signal and thus the DVI-VGA adapter wont work.

If its not that, then are you trying with the GFX card still fitted and its automatically disabling the onboard GFX?

There should be an option in the BIOS to enable the integrated GFX at all times, it maybe set to auto or disabled.

I am using the dvi-vga adapter on the GPU which is when it works, but when I use a normal VGA cable in the motherboard VGA slot it dose not work?

well you've already got the pointers in the 2nd part of stulid's post.

are you trying to run dual monitors? if you have a dedicated GPU it's probably better to run both screens off that and leave onboard disabled - assuming it supports it of course.

i'm not sure i follow. are you saying you don't have a dedicated GPU at all?

you're just trying the onboard DVI and VGA sockets? i can't see how an adapter would work because the board's DVI socket is DVI-D (the D meaning digital only). that means using a DVI-VGA adapter should not work where as plugging the monitor directly into the VGA socket should. all this is assuming it's a VGA monitor? i'm just confused now. :p

OK, the GPU is sapphire radeon 7850

I am using the DVI-VGA adapter on the GPU (The adapter is plugged into the back of the PC into the GPU, the VGA cable is plugged into the adapter. this works.

However when I put the VGA cable(not the adapter just the normal cable) into the motherboards VGA socket the screen does not work.

This is my first build so if there is something obviouse I have missed I apologise.

right. so i refer you back to stulid's post for a second time. :p

but why you want to do this i don't know. that 7850 has suddenly become a very expensive paperweight. if you're planning on selling/removing it, then just take it out and the onboard should work without having to make any changes in the BIOS.

edit: you do realise that if you want the performance of that card, you have to plug your monitor directly into it. it won't magically come out of the motherboard port even if you do enable it. :p

I am clearly wrong in my thinking, what I thought would happen is this.

I build the PC
plug an VGA cable from the back of the PC to the monitor and it would work as normal

the case plus the lenght of the DVI-VGA cable is long, as my pc unit is against the wall its sticking out and will fall off if knocked
