Can't wirelessly connect! please help :(

my sister has just arrived back from university and her laptop won't connect to our home network, it has in the past and will work with an ether net cable, and can still pick up other local connections around us but not ours; even when we add it as a network it just says it's not in range even if you're sat right next to the router

What adapter is it?
What OS are you running?
Is the router using channel 13? (some network adapters can't see channel 13)

it's one that came with the laptop (asus X501U) with windows, and no we are currently on channel 12, but while she was away I switched from 1 to 12

Try another channel and update the wireless drivers.
