Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows any good place on the net for buying capacitors?

Specifically:

1. 1000uF 25v
2. 1000uF 16v
3. 1000uF 16v
4. 680uF 25v
5. 680uF 25v
6. 1uf 50v
7. 47uf 50v

They need to be low ESR and rated for high temperatures (105C).

Its for a power supply board in my monitor.

Regards,
Amos

We always used to use RS Components... but not being funny - but assuming your doing this yourself - if you don't know where to buy this stuff from should you even be playing with power supplies? - there are some health and safety considerations that should not be taken lightly.

EDIT: This is somewhat hypocritical as I was playing with a soldering iron by the time I was 7 and almost electrocuted myself twice by the time I was 11.

Funnily enough eBay seems ok for small amounts of capacitors, I've just bought some for my Samsung monitor which takes about 30 minutes to turn on at the moment. Farnell worked out more expensive as I didn't have enough to make it worthwhile buying from them and the M company we're not allowed to name didn't have ones the right dimensions.

Regarding health and safety, just be careful - it's not rocket science and you never learn anything without trying.

Yeah I understand the dangers of it holding charge etc. Just need to replace a couple of bulging caps. Two of those being part of the high frequency oscillator circuit.

I've already replaced the power supply board with a new one, just thought I would replace the caps on the old one as a spare.

EDIT: Cheers guys, will have a gander over at RS and ebay

I've used Bitsbox a few times for discrete component orders. Only a few pence each mostly and postage charges are reasonable enough.

Rapid are easier to navigate, but have a higher minimum order value unless you are willing to pay the £5 postage (over £35 is delivered free iirc). Farnell is harder to navigate I find because the huge stock range, but they will take an oder of £20 or more and I think delivery charges are variable.

Do NOT purchase from eBay - 99.9999% of them are counterfeit, lie about their specs and are generally trashy fail. Not any cheaper either.

Not seen this before. Looks like Rapid parts being sold on, but the incentive is you could order a small number of parts and only pay the RM delivery fee rather than £5 courier I guess. Might work out well for OP.

Bitsbox and Rapid are good, Rapid are handy for me as I drive within a mile or so of their trade counter every day. I've bought some of the component packs from Bitsbox.

I ran out of 0.1uF decoupling capacitors so bought a couple of hundred on eBay for about two quid! They took nearly a month to arrive but are fine.

Maplin used to be good but are expensive now.

Well this thread along with waiting 45 minutes for my monitor to turn this evening on led me to finally replace the capacitors in my Samsung 225BW. All 5 of the usual dodgy ones on this model were bulging and it was a quick fix. Total cost a few quid from eBay and about 30 mins work so less time than it was taking to turn on. :)

Farnell is my first point of call for electrical components, then RS. If neither of those have it, it's probably not worth having/not available from the UK.

Farnell is nice & easy to find what you need too (unlike RS, which is why I go to Farnell first)
