Capello names Gerrard Captain

I can think of one player at Man Utd straight away that's been superior in Ferdinand. Best defence in the league, numerous clean sheets, a few goals, few assists and rock solid, he's having his best ever season at Man Utd.

But is he captain at Man U? Why would he be worthy of captaining his country if he isn't able to captain his club?

Nice and mature.
And I'm baffled how you could class Rio Ferdinand as a Chav?
Well groomed, intelligent and spokesperson for numerous charities...

You're gonna get murked meight.

That programme was laughable.

You really are passionate about the lad aren't you?

Is this the same Rio Ferdinand? :p

Not saying he isn't a fantastic footballer but he's hardly the perfect role model :p

No, I think he's our best defender by a million miles though. So what if he made a TV show which brought in large ratings by pranking England players in highly amusing ways?

I'm glad you found it laughable, it was meant to be.

there's a lot of bitterness and maturity flying about in this thread ;) there's no way that Gerrard has been the best english player this season. saying that i have no problem with Capello picking him as captain for this game, he would definitely need to raise his game if he wants the position permanently though.

It tells you what Fergie thinks of him as a captain when Neville got the role ahead of him :D

Ferdinand has captained our side a few times, most recently in the 2-0 win at Portsmouth last week. Neville was named Captain because it was a logical choice to give it to one of his 3 boys (and the other 2 had it first - Giggs and Scholes).

Oh I see, he wanted to be perceived as a total moron!

Thanks for that. Let's not start another Rio Ferdinand debate.

Who's been better then? It's pretty damn obvious a Man U fan isn't going to agree with Liverpool player being captain!

And Gerrard and Terry are models of maturity?
Ferdinand hasn't been in bother for a long, long time. Basically after Ferguson gave him the hairdryer for being in that restaurant with Kenyon. (which is also the reason he wasn't named as Captain until recently for those uneducated on the matter).

It's a temporary position, we're waiting for Fabio to appoint Rio and ensure the whole of Manchester (oops, Middlesbrough) is perfectly happy. ;)

In all seriousness, if Gerrard lifts his performance and the team follow, I can't see a reason to hand the captaincy back to Terry.

rio ferdinand has been better this season, his form has been monumental and he's pretty much ditched all of his errors. i did say that i agree with gerrard being given the captaincy for this game though? the only point i took umbrage to was you saying he's been the best english player this season not that he was qualified for the captaincy.

Gerrard was slated by Liverpool fans at the start of the season for being rubbish.

Really? Gerrard started the season on fire, had a dip in form (2-3 games) just after he broke his toe then since then has been playing well again. 16 goals in 33 games (from cm) and countless assists.

just the wqay it wqas put across on the news was that he had been made captain i.e permanently ?

if thats not the case then fair enough if only for the one game as it were.

No it hasn't been put across as he's been named permanent captain

Capello stated last week (and again today) that he won't name a permanent captain untill the Andorra game.
