i will be 20 in may and insurance for mey current car is due in june. i will be having a gap year in uni and getting a job (work placement). i would like a new car in the region of 15k.

Im open to car suggestions, i dont know if i should go down the hot hatch field or smart nice field.

Remeber i will be 20 so i dont think ill be able to get insured on type r's, gti's i dont think, unless some one can prove me wrong?? btw ill have 1 year NCB.

or i could get something like a 320 sport coupe 03/04 reg?

Any other ideas?

Im insured on the CTR @ 21 with 0NCB, not cheap though @ £1700

get a BMW of some sort, im sure there will be plenty of recommendations in this thread ;)

well im hoping 15k :) if not im sure ill be working after the gap year.

i want the coupe style with the m wheels in either black or gun metal grey, what u think?

but then theres insurance...

I've worked out it's pretty much impossible to manage more than £10k and thats if I live at home during the placement and spend nearly everything I earn on the car and insurance etc :(

Luckily that gets a nice E39 so its all good. If you actually can afford £15k then hats off to you - just don't go taking out loans that you pay back in anything more than a year, you are making a financial commitment you cannot be sure you'll be able to repay becuase few, if any, placement students have a guarantee about their future.

If you can afford £15k, you should get a nice 3 Series Coupe but you'll get a nicer Saloon than you would Coupe. Nick's suggestion of a 330d is a great one, but you won't be able to get the Coupe version for this budget.

Insurance wise I'm in the same sort of situation to you - its looking like between £1000 and £1200 for comprehensive insurance on a 530i or a 540i. I'd imagine 330i's to be similar cost.

Forget the Coupe and you can get so much more for your money.

I'm paying £1,600 in insurance. I'm 22, but have a claim (albeit only small) in my name. I imagine you could get away with cheaper.

Out of interest, how much are you going to be earning in the GAP year, and do you have savings to put towards the car/proceeds from another car?

Just skip the placement and go straight to final year, my mate got a brand new mini one for graduating with a 2:2 from his dad :D

Shame he didn't get a 2:1, he might have got something good :( :p

well i unsure on what money i shall be getting but i think it would be in the range of 10k at the least to 15k, preferably the 15k obviously. i might have a few quid to put forward but not much as i cant save. The car obviously wouldnt be paid of during one year so id have to get a loan of some description, not many people can buy cars out right (expensive one's). i would probably go for over 4 years which is about right to keep a car for if not 3 years, when ive finished my gap year i will return to part time work but working every second i could do. im not keen on those wheels i wanted the new m type.

this is what i want everything about it is what im looking for but to big engine (insurance , no no)...

Do not take out a 4 year old loan in your circumstances.

Seriously dude, don't do it.

You are a Uni student and the only 'guarantee' with your financial circumstances is that you'll earn between £10k and £15k next year. Thats it. The year after that, you are a full time student again, the year after that, who knows? You might walk into a £32k graduate job, or you might sit on Job Seekers Allowance or working at McDonalds.

You just DONT KNOW - so do NOT commit to any large financial commitments until you do.

I know, I know, you want a posh flash car. I do as well, and I intend to spend my placement money on it but the way to do it is to make sure that the day you finish your placement, you owe nobody any money. That means borrow money, sure, but only enough that you can repay it before you finish your placement job.

You'll seriously regret it if you end up finishing uni in 2008, unable to find a job, with £15k of car-debt around your neck as well and a car thats not worth the amount you owe on it.

I dont see what could possibly appeal to you abouy buying a car you cannot afford over 4 years, its a car, its not worth it. Buy one you can afford in cash or at very worst over the placement year only.

Later in life when you actually have a guaranteed income you can get into debt over cars, it'd be seriously stupid to do it now.

Agreed, totally. You can buy a nice/fast/sexy/fun car for peanuts nowadays. It's really not worth selling your soul.
