I am moving to a new job on Tuesday I have negotiated my salary and I have had them agree on a car allowance + mileage. They have told me to provide details of how much I expect / currently get.

So can people give me an idea of what a normal car allowance is and what you get in regards to mileage

i was on £400 a month car allowance, with fuel card for buiness and non-business milage - although it was effectively a pay rise more than anything...

40p a mile is the national standard for using your own car, upto 10k then its 25p cause of the taxation :)

It depends on the position, in a lowly starting position like mine i can only get £260pm+private fuel paid at a push.

In a higher position you'd expect to be able to hire a better car, so i'd expect a lot more.

Hard to really say then without other details :/

It varies wildly depending on the job/company/salary. Personally I got just shy of 800 a month in car allowance in an old job, but some people in the same company got 2-300.

In my currently employment i currently get £415 a month and 15p per mile.

But thats with my dads company i want to make sure asking for around £400 is reasonable.

The type of job is a Trainee Quantity Surveyor 3 years experiance.

what you might be better asking is proportion of your sallery - as it gives a fair idea of what you expect to get for the position, but again its gonna depend on the company and how much your expected to drive for them in your car

Rather than the headline figure push for the private fuel. I honestly dont know how i could cope with paying for and budgeting for all my fuel. I would happily take a huge hit the car allowance if it didnt cover it.

I had the choice of of either ₤475 to lease a car or ₤500 to run my own car as well as either ₤100/month plus business fuel paid for at cost or a Fuel card with private petrol paid. That's working as a Field Apps Engineer (though most of my travelling is done in taxis and planes).

The two different places I was at where I had a car allowance it was around 10% of gross salary. However these were roles that really didn't need a car much for work (the odd meeting with a client) and were both in the IT industry. I've known mobile sales forces to get up to the equivalent of 20% of salary for an allowance on the car plus fuel cards. They reason that because the fuel cards didn't account for wear and tear (unlike a 40p per mile mileage allowance) the car allowance factored into the equation that they were going to pile on thousands of miles onto their own vehicles and all the implicatins that had with regards to resale value, wear, servicing etc. However, I would say most opted for a car instead of an allowance in that situation.

AMAP relief ?

Does this mean that if they also offer me 15p per mile i can claim the 25p through my tax code? for any business mileage , if so how would i go about doing this ?

you can claim tax relief on the 25p

claim it on your tax return ( my employer does it for me but most don't )

don't shout that too loudly or you will have the taxman on your case :D

I've got no idea how it all works to be honest, I get 53p becuase my car is over 1800cc. Seems quite good I get more cash becuase I chose to drive a car with a proper engine :D

I get the same as you fox, it's tax free the year you get it, then the year after they sting you with the tax on it... which is rubbish if you're no longer doing those miles !!

Any amount above 40p for first 10k and 25p after that is taxable , there is no "free first year" they are just taxing you in arrears , if you suddenly stopped doing any business mileage you would still be paying for a year , in reality you are better paying in one lump at the end of each year
