I have a few things to sell and not been to or done a car boot sale for over 20 years...and even my parents did it and I just explored. :o

I have a Monzo bank account, is there a way of purchasing a contactless card reader that will work with my Monzo and take payments? What do I need or is there a different way of doing it?

And for those who have been to a car boot sale recently, is this now common? Or are people a bit unsure about paying this way when its not in a 'proper shop'?

Edit: I would accept cash also!

I'd imagine its still mostly cash at car boots, especially private sellers

Can't really 'bargain' as much with a card....I'll give you a fiver, it's all I've got etc :p

Yeah, there's devices like Izettle etc, but on top of the cost they usually take ~4% so you'd need to sell a lot to make it worthwhile.

It would be good if organisers could do something where you pay centrally and they distribute funds to the sellers. i used to love car boots but rarely carry cash anymore so if i'm ever passing one at random i don't bother.

Maybe also offer to accept Paypal Gift? Most people would have that and it's instant.

Not sure on the details but it can't be that hard - my window cleaner even takes contactless via a dongle connected to his phone :p
Makes it even more annoying/suspicious that the local Chinese takeaway still insist on cash only tbh.

Yeah, my chinese is the same, although with Covid they've actually started taking bank transfers to avoid cash, which is pretty amusing. There's a scrap of cardboard on the counter with bank details scrawled onto it!

The charges are ridiculous I bet he does it that way so you don't feel like you are handing real money over. I bet his prices are ridiculous for what is in reality a minimum wage job.

Sumup seem to suggest their charges are 1.6% and Izettle is 1.75%

I'm not sure either of those are ridiculous, and when you're only paying ~£10 i don't think many people would complain about paying an extra 20p for the convenience of paying by card.

Zettle is £29 (+VAT) for the hardware + 1.75% per transaction; Square is £16 (+VAT) for the hardware (requires mobile phone) + 1.75% per transaction.
Stripe are also doing something similar, although i don't believe they've released hardware yet.

I don't know about Monzo, but you will typically need a business account with a payment processor, that money then gets paid into an account of your choosing. So it may not be worth doing.

Go to Carboot’s every week, never seen a card reader or any other form of payment aside from cash

have done the odd bank transfer but that was with a regular seller
