Car broke down - advice ?

Jesus Christ, it looks like a dentally challenged badger gnawed that hole out. If you are going to cut a hole, at least make a decent job of it, and make a cover with a gasket to seal it again afterwards.

Yeah - that's not mine. I did our Mondeo like this using an angle grinder set to 3mm depth then pop riveted a carbon fibre sheet over it with a neoprene gasket around the edges to seal.

i thought those engines only had the high pressure fuel pump? If so that's a fairly involved job as its essentially a timing belt change.

They have a low pressure lift pump too - that's the in tank pump. It's a combined sender/pump unit.

So a quick update on this.

Yesterday, for the hell of it, I tested to see if there was possibly any blockage in the fuel filter (using a one way pump). After a few pumps, a bit of air came out along with lots of easy flowing clean diesel, so I think the filter was fine.

For the hell of it, we tried jump starting it again to see if it had made any difference (thanks to the prior attempts at starting the car, the battery was flat). Tried turning it over for about 10 seconds, nothing.

Tried again for another 10 seconds, and for some reason this time it started up again, a bit weak due to the battery but it was going. The only thing that concerned us was some kind of high pitched squealing noise in the engine bay. Couldn't say whether it was an electrical squeal or something like a belt.

I let the car run for about 40 minutes to build up some battery power again. After that, turned it off, gave it 5 minutes, then started it up again. Fired up no problem.

Only concern now is will it break down on me again, hopefully I can now actually get it to the shop :p

Before you go blindly swapping the pump I'd make sure you get the fuel rail pressure sensor tested. They do fail from time to time, and often can be a bit intermittent when they do.

Lot cheaper than a new pump.
