So over the weekend a lad I used to go college with was in a Car Crash, he recently bought the car on Tuesday and died Friday night, he died and so did his pasenger and others were injured.

It was a head on collision and apparently some people/person tried to revive them but he was pretty much dead on impact.

I just wonder, do you think before he died he would have felt intense pain even if it was instant?

I would expect it would have been instant if it was that bigger impact or he may have passed out. I would certainly hope it had been painless anyway.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

I'm no doctor but I doubt the body would have change to register the pain.

You weren't there, it's so difficult to know the situation, I've been around a few hundred deaths, not on the scene, but in hospitals, some are serene and some are torturous, sorry to say that. But what you are describing sounds like he died on impact and had no chance of feeling anything.

Yea its only like 3 months ago I last saw him and he was just full of life, lived life to the full pretty much, its just shocked me and everyone in our group pretty much you just don't expect it to happen to someone like that, I hope it was painless for him its just weird trying to get around thinking that he's dead

Over the decades ive had a couple of motorcycle accidents that have resulted in broken bones, internal injuries, hospital time etc, & on both occasions, depite bouncing off the side of a rather solid metallic object, the pain didn't kick in till the adrenalin & shock had worn off, hell, i even managed to pick my bike up ( all 550lbs of it ) with an arm broken in 2 places once.

I suspect your friend wasn't even aware his life had ended.

Sorry to hear your loss. Drivers who are found dead at the scene of an accident very rarely will have lived long enough after the accident for us to say they suffered. The mechanisms by which they die excludes the suffering we might find with other deaths. You need to not dwell on such things as they are in the past, beyond what you could truly know and of very little help to you bar the obvious need for understanding we all exhibit as part of displaying grief. Once again I am sorry but remember the good times never the bad otherwise as the years move on you lose the things you treasure about the person and will be left with just a memory of this time.

So you've hung around a few hundred deaths?

Medical or military?

Sounds sad but I would say one of my better skills is giving people dignity in their death.

Know all about it - my GF is a BASICS doctor here in Shropshire.

Thanks for all the replies, its weird to think how one minute your conscious then you just cease to exist in the next and life goes on.

I'll try to not think about it but its just hard to get past it even though I have some details on the crash

As you don't know the injuries that killed them it is an extremely difficult question to answer. But as has been already said it is not something that you should be dwelling on. If it is starting to effect you to much then maybe you should go an see a grief counselor.

Well I will get over it just like I said its a shock. Also to be honest apparently the car was speeding but I'm not sure if it was his fault or the other drivers, apparently he might have also had somthinge to drink according to one of my mates. If he was under the influence then its no surprise he crashed, gotta feel sorry more for the passenger if that's the case, also it seems he had only nipped home then was heading back into town when it happened

I didn't know them personally but I know of someone who went out with a friend who had bought a new car and went for a drive. That was the last time they saw her :(

Aye I think it hits people hard who have had more recent contact, also that's just rumours in my other post but hopefully more details come to light.

I also think with facebook and social media these days its hard not to think about it, guess I need to not login for a few days :p

The body is a strange thing, pain is something that seems almost welcome when close to death and in my experience the body/brain separates you from that pain insofar that when you are that close to death it is not an issue.

It isn't something you should dwell on, I am sorry to hear about your friend, needless to say that if he died instantly then any pain would have been immaterial anyway.

Is death instantaneous? (switch on/switch off)

Or do you think you get the 'time slow down' and 'life flashes before your eyes'?

I know i've almost been in a few accidents and although i couldn't do **** all about it, time seemed to slow right down!
