car cutting out

hi,
sometimes I have noticed as i'm driving along, the car seems to cut out. the rev counter drops to zero for a milisecond and my car jerks (as if I haven't released the clutch properly and have floored the accelerator), then it's back to normal and might not happen again for a few weeks.
What could be the problem? I was thinking maybe dirt/dust in the petrol?
cheers

Probably a sensor of some sort - idle control valve/stepper motor? MAF?

What car is it? Might be worth having a diagnostic's check on it.

Some hose disconnected somewhere? Have a look around in the engine bay. Sounds like the same symptoms my Astra had when a weeny vacuum pipe came unplugged. Back in it went and the problem went. It was so simple it was the last thing we looked at and blamed it on all sorts of major things first :p

You never know.

This happened to my mum's vw golf. Think it was something to do with pressure loss in the fuel line.

and how was it rectified?

i couldnt see any loose wires in the engine but then they might be hidden away
