Car died need a new one

Yes it is but the car still costs the same as the mazda anyway if not more so it would be on top of that.

It only costs the same as the Mazda if you insist on buying one that says '55' on the numberplate, in the case of the Cupra R at least.

I got a quote on a cupra r which is a similar group and it costs me around 60 quid a month extra :(.

dont go off groups!!! do a quote, groups mean next to nothing an octavia VRS will be significantly less than an LCR, if its not I will be surprised.

Actually, IME at least, groups mean virtually everything. In my car-selection research I've done quotes on many cars and almost always found cars in the same groups came out at the same sort of price.

Recent stuff, yea. But sit in a Pre 2002 Accord, or 95-01 Civic, or an FTO, or infact any Jap car designed and introduced more than 3-4 years ago. Cheap, nasty plastic everywhere - becuase all their effort went into exceptional reliability rather than perceptable quality.

A jap car from 95 is bound to be naff inside, but then if you go and look at a BMW or other "marque of distinction" to quote autotrader, then they are also pretty naff too until you get upto the top of the range models (and we all know how good the mid 90's 5 series were....not). But, that argument is pretty lame anyway as OP is looking at new/nearly new, so the quality of 10 year old car interiors is hardly relevant.

Personally, with only 1 yrs no claims currently, I'd be looking to spend about £5k now on something cheaper to run/insure, purely to get a couple more years no claims under my belt. Then I'd look for something a bit more desirable (I'm not a fan on paying large insurance bills).
I also agree with Fox, never buy new, the amount of money you lose each month through depreciation is truely depressing. But, if your happy to lose £1ks of pounds a year, so that you can have a new number plate for all of 6 months tops and a car that smells new (until 1 of your kids hurls up in it, speaking from experience  ) then go for it.

His mind is made up, and probably was as soon as he though 'oooo, i could have a new car!'. Everyone likes to have new things, and there's only one way he'll learn that with cars it's generally not advisable, and that's by going ahead with it and losing lots of money. It can't be an image thing (the plate), as he's going with a Mazda 3, instead of a car that most people would be impressed with, so it must just be the desire for a new car.

I'm far from stupid and fully appreciate the downfalls of buying a new car but in this instance i think it's the right decision as I've explained before. Also i am buying the car for myself not how other people will look at it. I'm 28 with 2 kids (and 1 on the way) not 18 so i stopped worrying about that a long time ago. Nice go at being patronising though.

If you could afford the car you want new then why not? i don't understand why everyone is so vehemently against it.

Because its money down the drain for now reason, thats why!

Not always but i'm not going over all that again. I can see the argument but don't understand why people are getting so arsey about it. It's not your money ;).

Generally because most of us have to work damn hard to earn a wage, so try our best to get value for money when we choose to spend it.

Buying a brand new car is one of the easiest and fastest ways to lose large quantities of your hard earned, and for that reason its very unlikely that I would ever buy a brand new car. I prefer for others to buy the brand new car, watch its value drop like a stone and then I'll buy it off them at a much nicer price :D.

Edit: I dont think anyones getting arsey about it, but some of us do feel quite strongly about it, and that comes across in the posts, and you did ask for advice/opinions ;)

I got the dealer down to 14.5k btw, just 1.5k - 2k more than a newish used car. I wouldnt have bought it for the book value of 16,695.

EDIT

I have to work hard too lol.

But still £4500 more than the 04 plate ones :p

Still, your money. If £4500 is small change to you then go for it, but then if £4500 is small change to you I'd set your sights higher than a Mazda - a nice Audi or something.

Could get a decent A3 for 14-15k?

If its your car , rather than the family car, do you need those extra seats etc.

How about treat yourself to a VX220 NA , proper 2 seater pure RWD Mid engined sports car, 0-60 5.6s. Get a years free motoring, as they do not depreciate. Cheap insurance. Cheap servicing ( £120 annual ). Maximum fun.

[edit] 40MPG too

Unfortunately i do, when the scenic needed to go in for repairs a while ago we really needed the second car with more seats, a 2 seater would have to be a 3rd car until the kids are a lot older unfortunately.
