Car drove into our wall

I live in quite a narrow street with only enough room for one cars width. Last weekend about 1am my wife was woken up by a noise. The next day we saw a car abandoned just down the street with it's front right wheel arch completely smashed in. After a bit of head scratching trying to work out what had happened it appeared that they had somehow managed to drive into the corner of our stone garden wall near the gate.

As there appeared to be little damage to our wall bar a few scuff marks. I brushed it off and thought oh well at least our wall is alright

The car was left down the street for a couple of days before someone appeared to come and recover it. Anyway somehow during this recovery someone else on the street managed to drive into the back of this car after being blinded by the sun!

I've now heard that the person who originally crashed into our wall is trying to claim insurance for the damage to the front of the car from the lady who drove into the back of them!

Is there anything I need to do? Am I somehow liable in this? (I don't see how)

I think what you need to do is hire out some space on the front of your wall for advertising, Specsavers may be interested given the quality of the locals visual acuity.

The only thing I might be tempted to do would be, if asked, provide a statement that the car already had damage to the front when the other car hit it in the rear and if you wanted to cause the driver a little bit of trouble, mention he hit your wall which is what caused it as the driver is obviously trying to commit fraud.

Legally I suspect not except in certain circumstances/if in certain jobs, morally yes imo, especially in something like the case of the op.

I tend to have a dislike of drivers who run off after and accident, but also I simply don't like someone who is involved in an accident getting the blame for major damage that was already done.

I would question why they abandoned the car for example and didn't make contact with the owner of the wall they hit - especially having had some seriously scummy neighbours* who did similar things whilst drunk and banned.

My view may be coloured by the fact that our neighbour's son almost certainly left a woman seriously injured in a hit and run, but we didn't know about the accident until after the car had disappeared having mysteriously been damaged (the police never caught them, but the damage occurred at about the same time, the car disappeared, and it was a match in colour/make)

*Lets put it this way, their favourite pastimes includes screaming matches in the street, running an unofficial bicycle collection operation, and getting raided/the house searched on a regular basis by the police;)

Why would you be in the least bit involved....you were in bed!

The claim/claims appear to be progressing as I would expect - the owner of the car is claiming for their damage, both from the original impact as well as the subsequent collision - the only other claim would be from you if your wall needed any attention!

^ Thanks, my mum always said I was special ;)

The am I liable was only half serious. The emphasis should've been on "do I need to do anything?". Funnily enough someone came round asking if I'd be happy to give my details as apparently there's a police investigation to do with leaving the scene of a crash. Which I have now done, yet to have anyone contact me though
