Car failed the MOT

Really annoyed this morning, I sort of thought my car was going to fail its MOT because I thought the front tyres didn't have a whole lot of tread left but instead it fails on the whole exhaust system, the wheel bearings and the hand brake, I asked the MOT place how much it would cost if I got them to fix it and they said £500 :eek: going to try and find somewhere cheaper to fix it, if not then it's new car time baby :D

I didn't go to Kwik Fit btw :p
 
£500? What car is it?!

If you're handbrake is buggered then it's probably just the cable you need which is like a tenner. Not sure about how much wheel bearings are, maybe £10-15 each? And the exhaust system depending on your car could be around £100+ for the whole system but why would the whole thing need to be replaced?

Smells fishy to me - £500 - no way!

yeah definatly, just got off the phone to my mate's dad who has a garage, he said he'll do all the repairs for me and it'll be about £30 to fix the hand brake and wheel bearing, then depends what needs doing to the exhaust, which he said will be no more than £50.

O car is an Escort
 
ya could probs do all of that work yourself tbh

and £500 is a joke... im guessing its a older car? as spending £500 on it is making you think new car..
 
IIRC if your car has a cat and thats if gone they are quite expensive to replace, unless you get one from a scrappy.
 
I remember when I had my last MOT I was looking at the signs up on the wall saying the prices for this and that...they want £5 just to adjust your headlights!

I wonder if they failed your car because they thought you were an easy target?

No its not the CAT, the car passed all its emissions tests fine, not 100% sure what's wrong with the exhaust, the mot thing just says part of it is deteriorated, car is a 97 Escort, so don't really fancy spending another £500 on it, recently spent £200 on new front and rear brakes, thats discs, pads, drums, hoses etc

At least by taking it to my mate's garage it won't cost me more than £100 hopefully.
 
Get your friends dad to check out what they claim it to have failed on with regards to wheel bearings etc - just to be sure.
 
I was gonna say, I had all 4 of my tyers replaced and my headlights refitted and readjusted all for £150, and thats including the MOT just last week... £500 seems a bit excessive...
 
wheel bearings will be around £25-£30 each...plus £15-£20 fitting per side.
handbrake cable £20 or so, fitting about half that.
exhaust circa £90 ish?
 
Got the car all sorted today at my mate's garage, he reckoned it shouldn't of failed on the wheel bearing or hand brake but it did fail his emissions test due to the exhaust, so he put on a new back box and rear pipe, tightened the handbrake and done something with the wheel bearing to tighten it up and then done a full re-test on the car all for £100 so not too bad really
 
Lots of wheel bearings can be "pinched" to reduce play. To be honest, unless the wheel was hanging off then a wheel bearing is only an advisory as far as most testers are concerned.
 
I had a similar experience a few years back.Car failed on loads of stuff and they offered a price of £350 to fix it.I new this was wrong so took it to another garage and got another MOT done and it passed.They are just after your money,they should be closed down places like that.
 
Funnily enough just had a call to say mine has failed on the rear brakes and handbrake. Had a feeling it would as the handbrake has been slightly iffy lately, just waiting on a call back to tell me how much it's gonna cost :(
 
Surely you'd be best advising them that whatever it fails on "I will get my mechanic to fix" then maybe they might think twice about diddling your money?
 
if any of the members run diesel cars i can offer some advice.
checkout your local council depot or bus depot.
most of them MOT their own vehicles and will happily perform the same service for a member of the public.this is legitimate by the way, not some scheme where you have to knock on the back door and ask for big trevor.
the advantage using these places is they DO NOT do any repairs on vehicles not owned by themselves therefore they have absolutely no vested interest in failing you un-necessarily.
you always get a straight test from these guys but unfortunately as far as i'm aware it's only for diesel vehicles although i may be wrong on this point.

I've heard about this before, seems a great idea. Didn't realise that it was only for diesels though. Don't they do all the taxis there as well, though which would seem to suggest that it was for petrols as well?
