Car for a very short commute and some fun at the weekends?

Hence the use of the words, 'the sensible option might be....' ;)

But in terms of fun factor, it's not wildly different to a S2000 or 350Z.

Although I agree on this (obviously) and as much as I like it, I would probably be looking at somthing more compromised such as a Boxster as a second car if there is no need for it to be practical.

IMO the OP shouldn't be looking at Elises/VX220s, as said you would know if you wanted one! Something more along the lines of a Honda S2000 or Porsche Boxster would be my guess. 350Zs are nice cars but are more GT than sports IMO but then I havn't driven one, this is just from internet/owners opinions.

It's quite true actually, the 350z is too refined for it's own good. It's a great tourer, but to really get the performance and limits from it, you would loose you license! and it's also too heavy for track fun compared with similar cars in the budget. I still love it for the power available all the time and the comfort/gadgets it has, no real opportunities to find out what it can really do on British roads.

Barry-ed up Fiesta?

Hmmm pretty tempting also. I hear Janesy B's the man to talk to in this department? :p

Z4 Coupe? http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1290121.htm

You'll have to stretch the budget a bit for a good spec, though.

That looks lovely to me, would have preferred the piano black trim though personally (I know it's sold, just commenting for commenting's sake). Love the cream seats though.

Would have to talk sweetly to the Mrs. to stretch to a decent Z4, especially since she's vetoed the sale of das Golf :(.

M3s I have a slight complex about many of them being driven by cretins that haven't looked after them properly and therefore being extremely likely to go wrong. Whether that's a fair assessment or not I don't know.

Your right to be concerned

they've fallen into the price brand of the "its an EM THREE INNIT BRUV" crowd. There will be genuine honest well looked after examples, owned by enthusiasts from new who are now upgrading to other things.

But its finding them amongst the dross that will be the key.

I don't think they have at all to be honest. How many cretins do you know who end every sentance with init can afford 11k+ to spend straight up on a car. Let alone being able to afford consumables and insurance. And how many have you seen being driven my said young people. I certainly haven't seen any.

The e36, certainly has fallen into that bracket. The e46, not imo.

With a price range of 15k your looking at being able to get a very good facelift model, with 40kish miles and some decent kit with full bmw service history.

There's loads of them, look at that 535d that was posted a little while ago. There are plenty of chavs who have money to spend (family money normally) - anything more I say might be considered racist so I'm not going to say any more!

RAAIIICIST !!!

WOuld love an M3 but especially the cheaper ones are falling into the range of plenty of undesirables.

Yes that was a sweeping generalisation!

I would be quite astonished if having test driven a Z4 roadster or a Porky Boxster you do not end up buying one. Enough thrust, six cylinders, sportscar shape, German build. Assuming the running costs vs your usage stacks up I would imagine these pair are your best choices.

Brand new Golf *snigger*! :)

Sorry but I can't see a saloon car as a special car for the weekend. All these big Vauxhalls, M3's and other such cars really aren't that special enough for weekend use only in my humble opinion, though I perhaps am coming from a slightly different perspective. I can see the appeal of an Elise or a Caterham, even a Z4 or Boxster though again I don't think I would take one of them over an Elise if I wanted a special weekend puppy. If I was going to use it day to day then a whole different thing but for special Sunday early morning blats I feel it needs to be special and eventful, hell TVR built a whole business on the back of this, you might want to look there as this is their sweet spot, though don't expect it to always start, not least if its damp or snowy.

The one that wanted to race me from the lights in town last night. Idiot...

and then you find examples like this

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1302052.htm

Lord knows what sort of tyres its got. And its got "full service history" so its not been serviced by a BMW dealer.

Its not like its a chav mobile, but its not the sort of car you want to be seeking either.

and this for example

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1309169.htm

with nankang tyres on an M3 for petes sake. Where else has he cut corners ?

and how can it be "first class" when its "got a few marks" (so make that a lot then) and all the wheels are kerbed.

the budget is 15k not 11k. Sure theres plenty of crap out there at that price, theres always going to be at the lower end of the market for any car. Thats not were we are looking here.

for 15k you will easily be able to find a well looked after fbmwsh car with nice mileage and good options.
