Hi,

Been driving a Golf MK5 1.9 TDI for about a year now - covered by my sister's insurance.

Want my own car and have always loved the look of the Mitsubishi Galant.

Opinions/advice/recommendations please. Keeping it open for now to see what kind of recommendations I get although I have a few in mind.

Cheers.

Accord type-r !

Why? Seriously, why? Great cars but they are high performance cars for enthusiasts - you pay to own one by paying lots of money for a rather old Accord, then high insurance, fuel and running costs. It's the sort of car you don't buy unless you know you want one.

Get your own Golf ? Might be able to get a old Audi A3 in that 5 grand.

Could get a MK4 golf for £5K, but there are better cars out there. £5K A3 would be a nail. Leon would be a better choice being the same car but with a less prestigious badge, you'll get newer for your money

I'd narrow it down a bit if I was you, we could name literally hundreds of cars! :p

A Galant suggests that you want a large fast saloon to me.

Why does it suggest he wants a fast saloon? There are numerous regulars Galants - saying you want a Gallant is no more a suggestion that you want a fast saloon as saying you want a Mondeo Estate is a suggestion you want a fast Estate.

OcUK really needs to get over this. Every recommend a car thread is packed full of expensive to run performance cars even when the original poster in some of them would be happy with a 1.6 Focus. But nobody ever seems to notice this, they are instead too busy lamenting me for apparently recommending BMW's in every thread

Sorry but I kind of assumed, as I wouldn't have thought anyone would want a gallant other than to go fast :p

I tried to talk Kate into having one when we went looking at Accords but she's too sensible.

Yea i noticed the mention of Galants. Even the non turbo ones are going to be reasonably costly to maintain compared to ford/vauxhall/rover? a good accord type-r would probably be in a similar price bracket to a galant and its around a 5k budget. I'd see your point if i'd suggested an old impreza with so many bits that could go wrong

The guy could go down to a dealership and get suggestions such as a vectra or a mondeo, if he gets some interesting suggestions to check out that he might not find at his nearest dealer then he can disgard them as he sees fit in 5 seconds :D Fact he even mentioned a galant suggests he'd like something a bit unique and unusual to me.

Thanks for the replies guys. OK, here's what I had in mind...

Mitsubishi Galant
Lexus IS 200 - difficult finding a low mileage one for £5000 ish
VW Golf MK4 - prefer MK5 look but can't afford it
Audi A3 - much prefer the 2nd generation look but can't afford it :(
BMW 3/5 series
Honda Accord

Quote for 2.0 Galant is £1130 ish so would like it to stay around that figure.

It sounds as if looks are your main priority, since you've not really mentioned anything else, which is fair enough. If that is the case, just by the one you like the look of best... you'd be hard pushed to find a truly bad car in this price bracket :).

It's hard to be any more specific without some more tangible requirements - performance, practicality, running costs, residuals, age?

What do people think of the above choices? :)

5 Series is in a different league to the other suggestions and is a noticeably better car than the others in every single way. Unfortunately, this means it's a noticeably more expensive car to run and you'll also be getting a much older one for the money. It's quite a gamble at £5k. If it pays off you'll have arguably one of the finest cars ever built (in terms of ability to fulfil it's design breif), if it doesn't you'll have an expensive headache.
