Car help needed

Why don't you buy the car after you've finished the 3 months of long commuting? Put all the miles on the current one - it isn't exactly going to make much difference to the price.

From further up the thread

The problem I have Olly is that work want main dealer proof of servicing to sign off mileage claims, with any advisories fixed and proof of this ! its totally mental, but has come in recently. This means I might need to spend say, £150 quid to service the car + fix any advisories that ford might decide it needs sorting + whatever it is to MOT a car now (due nov) + whatever might come up in that .....

I don't really want to put lets say, £300 into this car, on top of the 'loss' I'll make from 'lower profit' from my mileage claims over the period.

Edit - and also, the idea is this becomes the 'family car', so we'd look to keep this 5 years +. Even if I put 10k on it in the 3 months it wont make much difference in the end

Why not just buy a huge old Volvo for a couple of grand if you want a boring family car mate? All this money on a Skoda is madness :(

True, you can get a nice T5 for less than 5k. admittedly it will be 8 years old, have 50k on the clock and will only do 30mpg on the motorway, but it will be fully loaded and a nice place to be :)

Have to say that my T5 volvo has been very cheap to run so far apart from petrol. Mines a 2005 so only 6 years old, and can easily be had for under 5k.

Only costs so far in 18 months motoring is a new exhaust (old one rusted away) and a coil pack. Apart from that its just oil, tyres and petrol. Its on 136k now and still smooth and reliable. Still on original turbo + clutch too !

My T5 was proving cheap too... until aux belt snapped, replaced that and needed a new AC compressor and condenser. £1100 later :(

Sorry - I don't understand. You don't want to put £300 into this, but are willing to take a loan (interest free or otherwise) on something that will depreciate by more than that the minute you sign the agreement to buy it? Look at where the loss really is.

With regards to the fuel, I don't think you can claim for 10,000 miles without hitting a tax liability (forgotten the rules on this now). Not in a single year.

I'd seriously consider keeping the Focus for a bit longer.

I've not been clear here have I...

I'm not going to claim for 10k miles, based on what I know so far its probably likely to be a max of 6k.

I don't want to put £300 into a car I'm considering getting rid of, much like I'd assume anyone who doesn't like setting fire to money wouldn't.

Yes, I appreciate buying a replacement car will result in depreciation, but at the same time, this will be a long term purchase of I'd imagine a minimum of 5 years use. Unless I get a 2-3k car and just hope nothing goes wrong on it I'd get depreciation whatever I bought.

Dare I risk saying... the Skoda was actually relatively ... fun?

I also fancy the idea of something a bit newer and nicer than a huge old ovlov.

As thepeteh's post has highlighted, I dont fancy buying a 7-10 year old car and getting huge bills as everythings getting old.

I'd go for something like an E39 Touring as I'm sure they are collosal inside, but I just remember a couple of the bills petes M5 threw up on things like brakes and air conditioning.

Like I said further up, I'm more than happy to consider older, cheaper cars if the right thing can be found, but ideally I'd like something 3-4 years old max, and something I can put 100k on an not have a worry about doing it

Why? My car is 6 years old and no problems with mine, my previous car was 9 years old and no problems again.

because obviously

Owning an old car with aircon means you can end up with a £1100 bill for a whole new AC system.

Apparently ....

TBF the older car i just sold DRZ on these forums needed several hundred spending on the AC shortly after he bought it :/ So my confusion is fairly short lived.

God I love how OCUK twist things :p

My point is, an older car has a far greater chance of throwing up a bill. Cars which originally retailed for 30-40-50k don't magically become as cheap to run as a 1.25 zetec fiesta when they get under 10k.

Air con was a probably poor choice of point on this, but also, rather relevant when you consider the 4 figure cost replacement systems can have.

In honesty, its hassle I'd prefer not to have, which is why I've been considering cars under 3 years old that I can have a good warranty on. I don't really want to be getting a car where the warranty exclusion list starts with 'Engine, gearbox, chassis ....'

Like I said previously, I'll consider any sort of car that will meet our requirements. But spending any sort of money and not getting air con... unless your buying a track car, or a second car as a weekend blaster... I think your frankly mad :p

I quoted the wrong person really.

I was following on from MrLOL's post about his Volvo of similar vintage to mine with my recent experience, also matty suggesting a Volvo, it does all the things mentioned very well but can prove costly, like all cheap 'luxury' things.

Anway, depending on your budget sounds like Mondeo tdci estate would do it all.

I'd be tempted to pile some more miles on your focus since its already pretty high mileage but appreciate you need boot space.

Well, just got back from what feels like the longest day on earth, probably caused by last night being my leaving do from work. Note to self, arranging driving 200 miles to see a car the day after such an event with a 6am alarm call isn't the smartest thing to do in your life!

Went up to look at the Fabia VRS I mentioned further up in the thread and had a decent length test drive. Followed this with a test drive in a Octavia VRS for comparison, and we then headed off to a local country pub for some contemplation and a decent meal (I can recommend the boat inn just outside Doncaster !) .... and then took the Fabia out again after.

Long and short of it, we've done a deal on the Fabia VRS.

I'm sure there will be facepalms all over, but we are happy with the purchase. We tried loads of different cars and this was just the best one that suited our needs.

I'm quite pleased with the deal we've managed to do, which is...

The car (obviously) £14995
2 Year fixed price Service Plan £299
Autoglym Lifeshine (basically paint protection and interior scotchguarding) £294
6 Months Tax £71.50
Full tank of fuel ~£70

Now, if I'd paid the sticker prices for everything, it should have been £15730.50, or £16108.50 if it had been a new car through carfile (and god knows how much through a Skoda main dealer for a new factory order with a near 6 month wait).

We've done a deal for ...... £15140.

Focus is going to be attempted sold privately, but if I call no joy before pickup of this new car I'll just part ex it and have done.

So.... there we have it ! Car purchase sorted. Appreciate all the help people have given (and the fact I've pretty much totally ignored it).

I'll do a new thread once the car arrives with plenty of detail for those who care about a 15K skoda estate.

Why ask for advice if you will do the polar opposite of said advice?

Thanks for linking to a kit that, whilst it provides the product, isn't backed up with the lifetime guarentee for any stains on the cloth interior? I'm not actually retarded enough to believe its contents are worth that much, hence why I didnt pay anywhere near that much for it?
