Wow.... I expected some flaming, but not MikeHoiw levels of it.
Maybe I haven't been clear with the deal, or maybe I've made a huge huge miscalculation on what in my mind felt like an ok deal. In order to try and work out which of the two I've done... read on.
Forget for a moment that other cars exist. I say this because nothing else we looked at seemed to tick all the boxes of what we wanted. We literally went to look at what felt like hundreds of cars. We didn't want a massive barge/a huge people carrier/something which wasn't fun to drive/something with 70k on the clock already/a 30mpg combined 3.0 straight six......
Just humour me as I appear to have done for all you and work through this with me.
From Car file which Olly linked to earlier in the thread I could buy a brand new car with the same options for £15439, to break that down
The car £13951 base price...
Electric Rear Windows £124.00
3 Spoke multifunction steering wheel with telephone controls £132.00
Telephone Prep with Bluetooth £188.00
Cruise Control £140.00
Climate Control £220.00
Heated front seats £132.00
Front Arm Rest £72.00
Metallic Black Paint £352.00
Alloy Wheels in black £88.00
Floor Mats £40.00
Thats without Tax, and with whatever fuel they get delivered with. Lets assume its empty for arguements sake.
If I had gone down this route, whilst waiting the 6 months that people are quoting for new cars, I would have had to service my exisitng focus and MOT it. In order to claim mileage, work are now insisting on main dealer servicing. Ford quoted me £150 for the next service my car needs, and an MOT is about £50. Lets assume (again) that nothing needed doing to my car in the MOT or the Service.
Taking the option of waiting for a new car, including the servicing on my focus comes in at £15639. Put on 6months tax (£71.50) a full tank of fuel (£70) and buy the Skoda Servicing pack (£299) thats £16079.50
So. I'm lined up to pay £15140 (£140 of which according to the invoice as they did it 'at cost' is this lifeshine thing, read on later). Take that life shine £140 off, and I'm paying £1079.50 less than if I waited for a new car. This isn't taking into account the money I'll save with better MPG in the Fabia when doing business mileage during this wait time as obviously I can't guarentee what MPG I'll achieve.
Saving nearly £1100 in return for a car that is 2 months and 1000 miles old to me seems ok to me.
If you look closer at the deal I've done, I've worked it out as follows
Car £14559.50
Tax £71.50
Fuel £70.00
Servicing Pack £299
Lifeshine £140
I genuinely thought the life shine was worth it for £140 quid. Sure, I can get a kit for £40 on ebay, but theres no guarentee with that when, if we are lucky enough to have children, they vomit on the seat and the stain won't come out that someone will sort it and I dont have a nasty mark on the seats.
If most of the OMFG is down to me spending £15k on a Skoda Fabia Estate, fair enough. Its not the car I expect many of you to want to buy. If its because the deal is absolutely horrendous, and we could have done better on another Skoda Fabia VRS estate, point me in the direction of another car where there is definitely a lower priced deal to be had and I'll pull the plug on this deal. There are only 2 VRS estates listed cheaper than this in the UK. One is £14495 with 14k on the clock and a 2010 car, the other is £14499 with 7k on the clock, also a 2010 car. Both are missing several of the options (such as climate and heated seats) that this car has....
