Car help needed

But there are other cars. What's wrong with the Focus, for example? It it still regarding as one of the best driving cars in its class, and isn't huge by any means. The 2.0 petrol is still decent on fuel and you could get one that has done 25k miles. There are other options too.

Indeed we could, and I don't doubt the focus is a good car, hell I've owned 2 of them. However, we wanted something a bit more fun than a focus.

You know that a deal wasn't good when the first caveat you have to make in order to justify it is that no other cars exist.

I'm not doing that to justify it, I did it with the hope that the responses weren't OMG YOU COULD HAVE BOUGHT abcdefghijk etc and were instead 'looking at the numbers I think ...'

I thought the Fabia VRS was a good drive, yeah... 180 bhp, 0-60 in under 7 seconds, decent handling... It wasn't as fun as my S2000 was, but it isn't like it was a 1.6 N/A diesel with rear drum brakes and an oldschool slushbox.

That Lifeshine crap is a huge rip off. It's basically some wax, and the assurance that they'll get stains out of the seats. You can do that with a product from Halfords or www.cleanyourcar.co.uk, and some elbow grease. Ditto the wax. Ho hum. If they'd done a full on paint correction first and all the other detailing clobber then perhaps then it'd be worth it.

Oh and I like the look of the new Fabia VRS. I wouldn't spend £15k on one, but I like it

Thanks for the post Howard,

If the lifeshine isn't worth the paper its written on (I liked the idea of lifetime guarentee to protect the seats, the paintwork would be looked after by me anyway) then I'm tempted to call up and take it off then. Foolishly the Autoglym name made me think 'well, it won't be totally useless'

The £140 quid price comes with an Autoglym 'Care Pack' which includes quite a bit of stuff which must be worth a few pence (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lifeshine...ssories_Car_Care_Cleaning&hash=item4aae710930) is the contents, theres a few others on ebay, I doubt as that seller states that it is 120 quids worth in total, maybe £50-60 something if it wasnt 3 for 2 in halfords... kits seem to be going for about 30-40 quid on ebay.

the people selling it for £30 are making a profit too.

Its a huge money maker for the dealership. I would seriously ring and ask if you can cancel this part at least.

I would phone up and see if you can cancel the Lifeshine :)

That care pack doesn't actually look *too* bad, I use a few of the products it contains, but then when you do it all yourself you can mix and match different polishes/sealants etc (for example, I don't particularly rate AG Super Resin Polish). It isn't worth anywhere near £140 though.

Plus it's more rewarding ;)

The problem with your deal is not that that there isnt another one the same advertised at less money elsewhere, but that you've paid too much.

The car was priced at £14995 and you indicated you felt there was more in it earlier this week. To then leave the dealer with the car having paid more than £14995, irrespective of the piffle they've thrown into the deal to make margin, is just a complete and utter epic fail.

I'd have been wanting to get that car for £13995 at the absolute most if I was honest - there isn't any others around because... well... not many people buy a brand new Skoda and trade it in after 1k miles and it isn't the sort of car dealers will reg for a demo fleet, not because yours was some sort of uberdeal.

It's a second hand Skoda Fabia and you have paid the sort of money Broadspeed could have ordered you a new one for (Tax comes as part of the OTR price by the way), and this is just complete and utter epic fail whichever way you look at it, regardless of whether the car itself is any good or not.

Fox,

Cheers for the reply...

So what your saying is, because its used (1 owner, 2 months old, 1000 miles) you personally value that car at no more than £13995, irrespective of what the market conditions currently are for that model of that car... right? In the sense of, you personally don't think its worth paying more than that for it..

It is somewhat frustrating with you quoting this broadspeed price when that doesnt include any of the options. That isn't indicitive of what we would buy if it was a new car order, so its a completely unfair comparison and is thus a pretty mute point imo. For your information the same spec car with Broadspeed would have been £16706 OTR, nearly 2 thousand pounds more than I've paid if I take this Autoglym product off the order which your going mental about.

I was right that there was more in it. The car was advertised at 14995, I got told 14700, and I managed to get in effect another £141.50 off that price (fuel + 6 months tax.. Impressed if somehow dealers can mark up the cost of fuel + tax to get more margin...). There literally was no more money coming off that particular car.

Incidentally there aren't many around, your right there, thats mainly due to the 6 month waits people are experiencing due to delays making the things. People who ordered in March this year are still waiting for cars (estates and hatches) and some are being quoted as long as 'early 2012'. As I've alluded to in the thread, if I had to wait that long the 'effective price' difference gets even bigger with money I'd have to spend on the focus.

I have seen 2 Estates as demo cars (Reading had one thats now been sold, Red car no climate, no heated seats, etc etc) and a garage in Leeds had a white one (wasn't keen on it in white). I believe there are others in showrooms, but not as demo cars.

The estate version of the car isn't some uber boat compared to the hatch either. Its the exact same wheelbase, and hillariously 5 kilos lighter and more aerodynamic (140mph over 139mph top speed). Apparently the hatch rear end was a bit to skittish at times so it has 20 kilos of ballast to keep it on the deck more firmly.

Firstly you've no idea what the market conditions are for that model of car - I suspect few of us do though I doubt there is a queue around the block for used Fabia vRS, and secondly, yes, the fact its a second hand car means I value it at no more than 13995.

Correct.

Lets go through this then.

Electric Rear Windows £124.00

These add £0 to the value of a second hand car and I very much doubt you've specced them if ordering new. I mean come on?

3 Spoke multifunction steering wheel with telephone controls £132.00
Telephone Prep with Bluetooth £188.00
Cruise Control £140.00
Climate Control £220.00

I'll give you these - essentials on any car and frankly its quite laughable stuff like the steering wheel isnt standard anyway.

Front Arm Rest £72.00

Again, this option adds nothing to the value of a used car - but it's nice to have.

Metallic Black Paint £352.00

You have to spec met paint, I agree, and yes it adds to the value of a used car.

Alloy Wheels in black £88.00

This is a horrendous option anyway and combined with the black paint goes a long way towards making sure this car will look properly shabby in a years time.

Floor Mats £40.00

Even you would get 'mats' chucked in on a new car sale :p

[uqote]I was right that there was more in it. The car was advertised at 14995, I got told 14700, and I managed to get in effect another £141.50 off that price (fuel + 6 months tax.. There was no more money coming off because they had you sussed - they knew you were going to buy and they knew you were going to swallow the crap about the lifeshine as well. These guys are professionals and they had you - there would have been an easy tell that told them there was simply no need to discount this car to sell it to you. Had you played the Mr Uninterested card, moaned a bit about the awful wheels and said that really you'd be tempted but its just too much money for what it is and gone home, the phone would have rung all week with revised offers.

People keep going on about the Lifeshine but in my opinon it sums up the entire deal.

Fair enough regarding your point about price. Theres not much I can really say to argue with your opinion on that.

Regarding the options...

- Rear electric windows - Yes we would have added them as an option. If its useful to us over the course of our ownership why wouldn't we add them. Happy to show you an order form from Beckenham Skoda with those included on them !

- Climate etc, and the met paint no comment needed there as we agree

- Black wheels - Yeah, ok we didn't have those on any of our quotes we did with other garages. I'll give you that.

Re the crap on lifeshine.... wait for it... I asked for it before being offered. I'd read the booklet and liked the idea of protecting the seats. I guess that does make me somewhat choadish, but I wanted to do what I could to ensure the longevity of the car seats, and something to stop them looking crap with stains on sounded like a good thing to do. With it being an Autoglym product I assumed it would be pretty decent, and should have done more research as to how much I could have just bought a kit for myself, and the ability to get stains out myself without even having it on there. Fair one. Definitely epic fail. An issue that will be sorted tomorrow.

I also asked for the Servicing pack as it saves you over £100 quid just by paying for them up front, seemed a bit of a no brainer to me.

I guess I'm getting slightly wound up here as its frustrating that we are limited by our car choice. As you know Bek has a pretty **** illness which means unlike you and me, being able to get up in the morning and walk isn't a guarentee. Her illness isn't getting better as the doctors had hoped, so its beyond frustrating that the cars we'd love to buy in this situation we just can't have. Every single car MrLOL linked to earlier up the thread didn't have a big enough boot. Our problem is the 'family hatch' class that is the Focus/Golf/Leon has a totally full boot when we put her wheelchair in the boot. We wanted space for our dog we are hoping to get at Christmas in the boot area, and plonking them ontop of a load of other stuff didn't seem like the most sensible thing to do.

I guess another thing we realised as we were testing cars out was that we really fancied the idea of a auto type car. We chose a car with DSG as it means that when bek passes her driving test which we are going to try and do now we have more money, she stands more of a chance of being able to drive the car on an ok day with it in auto. At the same time, I can then drop it into manual if I want to have a bit more interaction.

So your problem is that you want an estate for the dogs, thats sporty, but also golf / leon sized, with a DSG gearbox, and not with Audi / Mercedes/ BMW running costs.

A very specific set of criteria that lead to you only having 1 option. - the Fabia VRS Estate.

Except the Fabia isn't Golf sized, it's from the class below and doesn't even use the latest platform from the Mk V Polo.

Howard,

Sadly, it is indeed ME. We thought a year or so ago we were starting to come out of it, but it just isn't happening, if anything, I'd risk saying we are in a worse place.

I guess in honesty I'd give up ever having the chance to have ferraris/porsches/lambos to get her health back up to what so many of us are lucky enough to call 'normal'. Reality is we would love to be spending this money on something silly, but it just isn't practical. Makes you realise that actually, so many of the things you think matter, don't matter one little bit ...

You never know though, stranger things have happened with illnesses I'm sure, and I really hope that the quality of life improvements my new role at work will bring us can make a bit of a dent. Being able to have a car which is more practical for us will help a lot I'm hoping.

Trouble is, there isn't a seat ibiza estate or a polo estate, or even an A1 estate, to get something thats comparable you need to go up a class to the golf / a3 / leon, of which only the golf comes as an estate. And not in a sporty model like the VRS does.

To get a comparably sporty estate you need to look a class above that.

If you specifically want a fabia VRS rival, there isn't much competition. The only one that seems to get mentioned is the mini countryman.

I thought so, I'm sorry to hear it. Its an awful, debilitating illness and you just have to rise above it as best you can. Of course nothing else matters, if it was a choice between fun cars and loved ones, well.. it isn't a choice really. Whether or not you got a deal of the century is arguable, the practicalities aren't. I wish you both all the best.

Like I said earlier in the thread we literally looked at everything, the Golfs boot doesn't have as much height as the Fabias, so it got discounted pretty quick.

We tried both a Clubman and a Countryman, both too small again !

Thanks for the kind words, appreciated.

What would you lot recommend then, if anything, to put on the seats for a bit more protection for the fabric in case of spills?

Seat covers? ;) I don't know exactly what products are good for removing stains but I'm sure if you head on over to the 'Car Cleaning Thread' someone will recommend something :)
