Car Insurance Claim - Advice Please

I'd throw some cash at them and get it done and over with! people can be real ass holes and if you meet the right one, they end up throwing right under a heavy bus!

I can get a brand new pair of unpainted electric wing mirrors direct from Mazda for like £55.
It would cost that much to repaint one imho.

What car and year is it?

EDIT: Just looking at the pic again, thats not even painted it looks like plain black plastic trim

Wing mirrors are fair game imo. He should have tucked them in :p

Your girlfriend is waaaay too honest.
haha

Where has he come up with the 200 figure? Why dont you just ask him to get a quote or two for you to have a look at and come to a agreement to cover that cost. Probably a bit late if its getting a little hostile.

I concur with the buffing out with a wet cloth or something. looks more like her car left paint on their car more than anything :p

To make it worse it's ford ka (11 plate)

And yes she's way too honest, I went mad at her as soon as she got in telling me that she'd left a note. Fair enough if the whole thing busted off but is just a small transfer of paint that should easily come off. She's letting me know what she wants to do later on when she gets back from work

Looks like this wing mirror would be the one he's after.

Plus a bit for painting...
OR

Already painted in the colour of your choice for £70 delivered here

£200 is way too much

There could always be some good samaritan go round at night with a bottle of T-Cut and wipe it off :p it does just look like paint transfer.
And tbh with you I bet that's all he's planning on doing anyway haha

DIY repair, I recently purchased a volvo v70 mirror for £20 from a scrap yard, full assembly, electric mirror... £15 for custom colour paint from Halfords. So to throw some labour in I would say £100 would be reasonable.

That's a full repainted electric mirror.

I only had the colour coded clip on part broke on mine so it bizarrely worked out cheaper to buy a complete unit and repaint the colour coded cover.

Brand new dealer parts, of course far more expensive, especially things like mirrors as they get clipped all thettime so it's easy money.

But it just looks like that mirror needs a good refinish as others have said.

You'd be surprised what you can achieve with some good Polish and a bit of patience.

Maybe a compromise would be to get a scratch repair company like chips away, to have a go on it.

a good refinish?
It really does look like its paint from OPs car on the unpainted section of the mirror.
I really would be tempted to go round T-Cut it then ask him to show me the damage again :p

Well she's quickly ran off insurance quotes with no claims bonus (only has 1 at the moment anyhow and due for renewal next month) and only works out £80 more so doesn't make financial sense to pay upfront, plus I dont want to give him the satisfaction as I know he will just buffer it out himself (no dents/indents to the plastic) and pocket the cash.

Did she run the quotes with a fault claim though?

By refinish I meant a good polish with a cutting compound, and some careful sanding on the unpainted portion of the housing.

Actually looking at the photos again, it looks only to be the unpainted part..

I'm revising my advice... As someone else said, go round with a microfiber cloth, some T-Cut and a bottle of water and do some guerilla detailing.

What damage?

If it was me I'd get a quote from a garage for the repair and then judge from that whether it's worth making a claim on my own insurance.

If there was no damage to her own car and therefore no own damage claim through her own insurer, then she won't have to pay any excess at all, unless her policy for some bizarre reason has whats called an "all sections" excess - but I've not seen a policy with this sort of excess for 10 years+!!!!

The third party can rightfully reject cash in lieu of repairs - if it was me I'd get a quote for the repair and present it to the person who hit the vehicle to see if they want to pay themselves or go through insurance!

On the other hand, if there is ever anyone in a car that is hit, you will want to report it to your insurer irrespective due to a possible personal injury claim in the future!

A garage will simply charge for brand new parts and fitting though which will in all likelihood come to at least £200,so if you are to go down that route you may as well just give them the £200 they are asking.

This!

Sorry, I misread thinking it was £200 offered by your missus rather than what he wanted!!

Definitely go down this route but if you do, make sure you get something in writing saying something along the lines of "this is in full and final settlement" and get him to sign it!!! (it most likely wouldn't hold up in court but it would make it less likely for him to try it on again with your insurer!!)

Please go and clean it off in the dead of night. I think I would actually do it if I weren't worried about neighbors noticing or the alarm going off during a vigorous rubbing session. (of the mirror) :p

Update: I was willing to discuss cash further but the guy is outright refusing to deal with cash now - think I called his bluff after I asked to see the quote. He's adamant that he will go through the insurance now, so time will tell.

In the mean time I've spoken with a ford dealer who said the plastic unit can be replaced on it's own at a cost of £40.

He really is just cutting his nose off to spite his face now... i'm pretty sure his premium will also go up even though he's not at fault (plenty of articles out there to indicate that)
