Look at smaller estate cars, trust me even with 1 child they will start to make sense. Forget loans etc, find a late model E46 touring, I think they look fantastic, but maybe it's just me, and they feel solid so the missus might find it feels SAFE. Slightly newer, and safer? Volvo V50 R Design - quite like those too!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. She seemed OK with the idea of driving a bigger car than a focus / golf etc so that helps.

Any reason why I should avoid vauxhalls (in particular insignias) ? If they are thought of as being crap to drive then that's not a worry, anything is going to seem like pure luxury after the 323. Or are they notoriously unreliable? If that's the case then it's a different matter...


Would a mondeo be a better option?

This is not true, the Insignia is an absolutely fine car, very good ride quality for its class, very economical, cheap to repair and run.

Sorry but that's total rubbish based on ???

From experience, insigna's break a lot (had 2 engine failues before 3 years old in the last 3 months at work)

As already said why buy an inferior car for similar money, why take the chance it's going to be a good realiable one?

Mondeo's are ok, but older ones are getting plagued with cosmetic rust and niggly problems now, but it's a much better budget choice than any vauxhall.

As already said if you want your missus to feel safe get her in a german car, little else feels as solidly built.
Another car to consider is an Audi A4, they feel and are as solid as a rock. i've seen some audi's that have been involved in some big smashes and even the police have said "if that wasn't an audi they'd be dead"
Don't get me wrong the germans have their problems too, the newer the worse in this case.

I wasn't but if you admit that depreciation exists and forms part of your cost comparison, the bulk purchasing of a lease firm and the occasional deal can be cheaper than buying one outright.

Or just do what many do and stick your fingers in your ears and lalalalalalalalalala about depreciation :p

What about if it was a Volvo, or a big old merc? Or a heron.

Sorry, ignore heron suggestion, birds have hollow bones. The other two I'm sticking with. And the fact people are human.
