Hi Guys,

At 29 I'm finally taking the plunge and taking driving lessons, mainly for work purposes; the commute to and from the various places I'll be working...

Basically I'm looking for a smallish, cheap to run and insure motor that at 6ft8 I can drive comfortably... I struggle to get behind the wheel of a lot of cars I've tried

Please give me some clues....

Well I'm 'only' 6ft1 but found Ford Focus very comfortable as my first car. They can be found for quite cheap, insurance on 1.6 litres is very decent and a lot more respectable than many first cars.

I used to work with a really tall person, he had a Saab 93, built on the Vectra platform aren't they so should be plenty to choose from there?

Fords all tend to have good head space. I am 6.3 and never had a problem with Ford.

Dont get a mini, i had to tilt my head to drive that lol, think you would have to open the sunroof :p

Bear with me here... But the fiat bravo has been said to have great leg room. My 2 colleagues car share in this, they are both 6ft 2++ and one of them must weigh about 22st so there is plenty of room too.

I think its because the seats go back and the dash is high so knees dont get all crampt up.

Person at work who is about 6ft 6 (and a big guy) used to drive a Saxo as he said it was one of the few cars he could fit in. We have another guy who is 6ft 8 who used to drive a Mini GP, and now drives a 1 series coupe, but they are probably out of your price range.

Think it depends on your body type as you can be either all leg - where leg room is important. Or all body where head room is more important.

I don't have this problem mind as I'm 5' 8" :p

I am 6ft 3 and had a K11 micra and now have a MK1 MX5.
You will be fine in something like a MK2 Focus as I have the only 2/3 of the way back in mine.

I would avoid small cars as you are just not going to fit in them properly. An Astra or Focus would be fine though imo, although make sure you get some with adjustable seat height or your head will be on the roof :p.

I'd echo the Ford comments. I'm 6'4" and drove a mk2 Mondeo without any issues, I didn't even have the seat all the way back. You will probably have to accept the fact that the rear seat behind you will have zero leg room though. I also had an old Fiesta for a while and that was fine, and my sisters new Fiesta is OK too.

pre year 2000 Volvo S70 and V70s have a lot of headroom and leg room. Cheap to insure as a young driver in my experience too.

I am only 6ft 2 and found the mondeo pretty crappy. Fully back still not quite big enough.

Newer cars seem to have improved loads, got a new focus at work and it's great.

BMW's have always been good due to decent height adjust. Mini's are good just a pita to get in and out of with the seat low

I'm 6'4" and drive a MINI.

A proper mini ?
