I'm currently on the lookout for a "sporty car"

I have £5k to spend. Ideally I'd love an Elise, but can't stretch to their prices.

I'd like the car to be 1998 and onwards, under 70k mileage.

Quick, sporty looking, maybe good round corners too :D

I like the Clio 172 due to the performance, but is there any other "sporty" equivalents to this?

I know the Elise and 172 are hardly similar looking wise, but I'd prefer performance to looks if it comes down to it.

Any decent recommendations?

Thanks

Yep MX gets my vote.....

You should squeeze a 1998 / 99 1.8i for that money, hunt around and you might even get a 60k iS, which is well worth having over the standard i.

You called it yourself :)

172 > MX-5

You could also look at the MR2. You'd get a turbo for your money and thats another car that beats the MX-5.

Honda Prelude 2.2 Motegi.

Crazy break dancer talk. MR2 > MX-5 > 172

Depends, the Mazda won't fall apart or be in the dealer more than its on the road, you don't have to be flying along to have fun and beside less than a second in it to 60 anyways, no doubt with its extra bhp the clio will pull better as the speed increases though.

loads of 80-90k 3.0ltr m3s on Autotrader

the 3.0 was slightly more reliable and hardly any slower as normaly did more than the listed 286bhp

even some higher mile 1996 evos in there

Yes, what M3 for £5k??

I like the sound of the MX-5, but I can't help thinking they look a bit girly, I like the new one however.

MR2 is a bit dated now also.

check out the link above the 3.0 ltrs are a better bet as you can get a good one for 5k rather than a bad 3.2 evo, and like I say not much in them bar better seats and 6 speed box
