I currently have a Mondeo ST220 which is needing a little work done to it. The wife and I think it may be about time to look for something else (the bills are beginning to creep in)

We only do about 8k miles/annum and want something with similar or better handling and performance.

We don't want to fork out more in road tax than the current car (pref less), and want something that is a little more economical (The ST averages around 24mpg), also less miles that our current car (60k)

We have a budget of around £10k-£16k but we would like something under 3 years old/ or proven reliability if we are going to go to the top end of the budget. (We could go above by a few grand for the right one)

We have looked at the newer Mondeo Titanium X sport and the Audi A4/A6 and the Alfa 159. Reliability is the main thing, we can't be asked to keep taking it to a garage to fix niggles etc...

So suggestions please....

and a little advice on whether we are putting to much emphasis on mileage/fuel consumption Petrol/Diesel etc...

I did like this.....

but it seems a little too cheap (not that I know what I'm talking about tbh)

if your ST220 is costing too much, stay away from BMWs, Audis and Alfas.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire as far as repair bills go.

Which engine Titanium X Sport where you thinking of ?

I saw a Titanium X Sport Estate in black yesterday and thought it looked absolutely fantastic. What a great looking Mondeo. Had the bodykit.

Scrub the Alfa, if your looking reliability, not because they aren't but because if a bulb blows you'll curse the Alfa and everyone in the pub will laugh at you, yet if the Mondeo has total engine meltdown it'll be OK because it might just be a one off.

That leaves the Ford and the Audi, the Audi will be older and lesser spec, the Mondeo will be newer and better spec but depreciate like a stone.

The ST isn't about costing too much as such, it is just turning into a nightmare taking it to the garage every few month to get something else fixed. We have had it for 7 years anyway so it's time to get s new car.

As for the Mondy engine wise, we have looked at the 2.0Ecoboost, but I've heard that the 36mpg quoted is more like 24mpg in the real world.

Or the 2.2 TDCI, but again do we do the miles to warrant a diesel.

I really like the Titanium X Sport estate, as far as estates go it is definitely the best looking one out of any of the current crop regardless of badge.

What about the BMW 325i in the advert, does that not seem a little cheap to you?

I am open to suggestion of other manufacturers other than those I quoted, as well as different classes as long as it is big enough for a 6'2" male and has room in the back for a growing 11 year old. We looked at the Volvo c30 (the wife likes it), but that was too small.

The 2.0 Ecoboost Titanium X Sport seems a brilliant idea.

The TDCi diesel engines in the mondeo arent the most reliable. So if it annoys you to be taking the car to get things fixed, best avoided. Unless they've made them uber reliable in the latest model and ive not heard ?

The titanium X mondeo is a fantastic looking car, gets great reviews as well.

Brother in law had one as a hire car and we both thought it was great.

How about spending about 10k and buying a 2006 bmw E46 330CD M sport or M sport 4 door(facelift model) i know its a bit older than what your asking but worth looking at plus you would have cash left.

Good reliable cars i have a 2005 320cd and its the best car i have owned, Im getting 43mpg and £155 tax per yr.

Owned a 2005 saab 93 before that it was a 1.9Tid vector sport and it was a pile of cr@p

Link to something like i have but you can see see what i mean

Especially as lots of E90s are now popping out of warranty which means prices are falling quicker than they were, obviously leading to lower E46 prices.

We are going to look at a '09' VW Passat CC 1.8TSI with 14k miles from a VAG dealer today for £14,750, we will also be looking at a '58' Audi A6 2.0TDI SE with 39k for £16,290 from the same dealer....

no link to the CC unfortunately, its arriving today so thats the reason why I guess.

Any thoughts?

Or would a '10' Mondeo Titanium X Sport 2.0T Ecoboost with 6659 miles for £15,499 be a better option?

I never thought buying a car could be so darned hard....

I really like the look of the Passat CC, also seems a good price. Not sure I'd stretch the budget for the A6 though.

There is always the Skoda route if you don't mind the badge.
The Octavia vRS (petrol) might tick the boxes? or perhaps the Superb as an alternative to the Passat/A6?

No thanks, I don't paricularly like either the Octavia (my ST is a better car) or the Superb, they just don't look that 'well put together', I know they are VW owned, by why buy one if I can afford an Audi/VW anyway. Also they cost more than the Ford.

Passat vs. Mondeo...the Mondeo is a hatchback so the Passat might be more refined in terms of road noise, as it's got a genuine saloon boot arrangement. The rear headroom is annoying in the Passat but might not be an issue for you at this time.

Personally I believe that the A6 is the best car of the lot, but you're paying more for an arguably worse engine and more for the badge.

If you can find a petrol A6 and have the budget for the one you find, that's what I'd go for.

Have you tried either? I think you'd be suprised (by the Superb in particular).
They are every bit as well put together as the VW/AUDIs.

Why have one if you can afford the Audi/VW? You could get a newer, lower mileage car for the same money, yet essentially have the same car :)

Each to their own however - the Skoda badge doesn't appeal to everyone.

I'm trying to think what else to suggest beyond the Passat/Mondeo but haven't come up with anything that meets all your criteria

I test drove the Octavia a while ago, I'm not too keen on the styling particularly and it doesn't handle anywhere near as well as the Mondeo. As ror price, the VW CC are actually cheaper or comparative, and the Mondeo (which is a better car) is cheaper.

I'm not that bothered about the badge (I have a Ford while most of my peers are driving Mercs after all)

I know what you mean about choice though, there is also the BMW 3 series coupe (I dont like the Saloon) or the 5 series to consider I suppose or I could up the budget a bit for the A5 (The wifes weapon of choice)

I am just completely flummoxed frankly, The problem is that I am really attached to my ST220.

If you're going to be ferrying around an 11 year old and his mates, I'd get a 4 door. Forget the A5, it might get annoying having to clean trainer scuff marks off the leather all the time.
