Hi all,

I will most likely will be buying a VW Polo 06 3dr black at the end of the month (£800), apparently there are a number of pretty serious scratches.

Could someone please tell me a rough price of how much it would cost to respray the whole car?

Thanks

£1k absolute minimum, probably around £2k for a decent job, assuming the same colour. It's very rarely worth it.

53k miles.

Price given for a part exchange from dealership.
Thanks Muncher. Will have to see how bad it is, if its even worth bothering.

800 quid?! There's got to be somethig wrong with it for that price, aside from scratches

Personally, it's not going to be worth respraying a standard little runabout. Smart repairs or even polish will help a lot and you can respraying individual panels which are really bad if need be

Its simply the price the dealership paid, that low because of the scratches. Average price is £2800, obviously if they sold it though they would need to make profit (my dad works at the dealership hence buying it at the price they paid)

Ah, I see. That's lucky!

It definitely won't be worth respraying, but spend a weekend with a touch up pen and some t cut and you'll be surprised at the difference

You could get a cheap job done, sub £600 if you prep it yourself and make masking minimal.

It wont be a show winning job by no means but the longer you take the better it could be. Just stick to the original colour or the door shuts and non-painted areas will look ridiculous.

I have done one or two myself but it's a load of work and I always had a car sprayer on hand to check my work. What looks good to you as an un-trained sprayer (like me) will be pulled to pieces by a professional.

Also black will show everything, but white you get away with more. Ask a paint sprayer about prep before paint hits the panel.

Being black you maybe able to get away with spraying a few panels and polishing the others to match with a DA. If it is pure black the good thing is black is black.

What about a correction?

????

I kind of thinking the OP is either a young or fairly new driver given the car choice.

If you mean by correction just getting the bits done that need doing that's what I meant in the post above in probably a long winded way.

If it is a few panels and you prep them yourself I would say go for it. Knowing the rubbish I have sold in the past with VW badges you will more than likely make your money back after putting 20k on it with respray. So many people buy the VW badge before looking at the car.

Saying that you may just want the car to look great and it is not gonna cost a more than a few hundred quid. I would go for it.

New driver, 1st car.

One reason I like the Polo is I can fit in it! I'm only 5ft 11 but in my sisters Fiesta for example my knees touch the steering wheel - not comfortable. There is also space on the left of the clutch on the Polo to put your left foot, which I like.

I will have to see how bad the scratches are and go from there.

Well its sitting on the drive, dad drove it home.

Few problems!
Took a couple of attempts to start on the way home.
We just drove to the shops and it took a couple of attempts to start - had to put accelerator down to get it on.

On the way home, it just wouldn't start. Just juddering away. Failed at push starting it, had to get some jump leads and eventually (30 seconds?) it started. Will have to try get it going tomorrow and leave it going for a while to see if it is just a battery problem.
Dad drove it for half an hour on the way home - but I know nothing about cars so not a clue how long the engine should be kept running for.

When you say push start you do mean rolling with ignition on in gear then letting the clutch out? Its very unusual for a car not to bump start even with a gubbed battery.

Are the dash lights dim or are any flashing? If it started with a jump battery will be the first place to check to be fair

I was doing the pushing, not a clue what my dad was doing inside =/ Not much use I know.

Dash lights looked all fine, nothing out of the ordinary.
