Evening all.
Just wondering if anyone can link me to/tell me whats done in a major service and once i have paid for the service is that all? or is it like an mot where there going to hit with a whole load of stuff that needs done?

Thanks.

Whether stuff needs doing depends entirely on whether there is anything on your car that... needs doing.

You do realise that somebody not spotting it for you doesnt mean you dont need to get it done, right? :p

lol Cheers.

But surly if im paying ~200 for a Major service, that will include everything that is needed? oil, filters, spark plugs etc? and £200 is all i pay?

It will include whatever it is included for the level of service you pay for with whatever car it is you own

If they find your suspension bushes are shot whilst doing the service then obviously it wont include that.

Ah right thanks, Just done the MOT and is due a service now, so i hope that the price of the service is all i pay :p and that they dont find anything wrong just after the mot. :)

You do have to remember that the MOT is not much more than a safety check, and a pretty basic one at that! Don't be fooled into thinking that because it passed an MOT recently there won't be anything left to report, as you may find that there may be one or two issues with your car that wouldn't be flagged up on the MOT.

As fox pointed out, what your £200 buys you depends entirely on the garage. Where I work £200 wouldn't buy you an oil change :).

I have a Ford Mondeo 2006 and its 3 years old and just done over 25k so does it need a major service now or can I wait a few months. Also, what should it include if I don't have any parts that are faulty etc.?

Also Ford are charging a lot for it so should I get it done elsewhere or stick with the manufacturer?

I wouldn't say so. I got advisories for deteriorated bushes 'not resulting in any movement'. It's a pretty comprehensive check and probably more complete than a mechanic just having a quick 'look' at the car.

Go have a look in your service book. It outlines what needs to be done in their with each service interval clearly stated. I would try and help but do not have this document and you should.

Then when you call for quotes from the garage simply ask them what they would do in the major service for your car and if anything extra needs doing per the service book, get them to do it as well and then you have comparable quotes with all work required done.

Anything extra and out of the ordinary as mentioned above will obviously be a event by event basis.

MOT? 'Comprehensive?'

lol

If you read again:

It's 'pretty' comprehensive and over and above what your average spanner monkey would check for when having a look over the car. Apart from obviously the general service condition of the engine.

Where do you work, Greypaul Ferrari!?

He's an apprentice Bentley tech'.

Funnily enough, the one guy I know with a Bentley doesn't pay anything like that kind of money for an oil change....God bless enthusiast mechanics with an extreme aversion to actually charging you for any work....:)

Jack Barclay Bentley :).

With labour at £150/hr and a sump full of Mobil 1, things soon add up!

I believe a first year's service on a GT is around the £850 mark, and that's relatively minor in terms of what is changed (Oil, filter, pollen Filters & Washer Fluid! :D). A 'Major' service (4th year), That's for Oil, Filter , Pollen Filters, spark plugs, Intake manifold gasket and air filters and you're well into the £1,500 region.

I wouldn't say so. I got advisories for deteriorated bushes 'not resulting in any movement'. It's a pretty comprehensive check and probably more complete than a mechanic just having a quick 'look' at the car.

As far as I'm concerned, the "quick look" check over is what you're paying the large chunk of the service cost for. Any idiot with a fisher price "My First tool kit", trolley jack and the correct parts can change oil, filter and spark plugs. What any idiot cannot do is know exactly how something works and how something does not work. Any idiot won't have the eye for detail that us "professionals" for spotting faults, or know where to look for them.

An MOT doesn't require the wheels to come off, I've had my car given back at one MOT station (not my company's may I add!) and told "I think there might be a problem with your brakes, but I can't see your discs and pads through your wheels, so I cannot be sure... Anyway, here's your certificate". On any service - Wheels off, Discs are measured to see if they are within the manufactures tolerances and a proper visual inspection of both inner and outer brake pads and if they are noticeably worn, they are taken out of the calliper and measured individually. The time whipping off the callipers alone would eat up the 45-odd minutes they give for a MOT, Heck, I spend about 45 minutes on my interior check alone when I'm doing a service!
