Hi guys,

What do you think is best... my MOT expires January 12th and the car is on its last legs so i'm going to get another one around this time. My car tax is due to expire July 1st 2012.

Do i get 6 months car tax and hope I don't need the car immediately in the new year and aim to buy another car before December is out? OR do i get 1 years tax and claim back 6/5 months or, if possible, transfer it to the new car?

If you don't think your car will pass the MOT in January, and you don't want to put the money in to make it pass, why tax it for longer than the MOT cert?

Because 6 months isn't enough and costs more per month than 12?
Get 12 and cash it in if it fails.

because my mot is on the 12th of january and the tax will expire on the 1st if i get 6 months. i'm really wondering whether it's better to pay for a year and get a rebate than it is to just get 6months insurance

I was taking him literally. When I describe a car "on it's last legs", it wouldn't pass a MOT in a month of Sunday's!

Also, no reason why he couldn't MOT it early (up to 30 days to maintain the original anniversary) and the 6 month tax *penalty* would be less than the extra month the DVLA will take off him for not cashing in his disc until January.

Sell it now while it's still got MOT..

nobody will buy it; it's a 14 year old vectra with 150k on the clock, the brake lines need doing, the clutch needs doing (which requires the gearbox taking off), the front suspension needs replacing as the shocks are on the way out and the radiator is leaking. To change the clutch alone it'll cost £300~ and the car isn't even worth that it so I may as well just use up the 6 months of its life it has left and get rid

If it were me I'd tax it for 6 months then plan on getting a new car in December. I couldn't be chewed with paying more for the tax for a start, then refunding the tax for the sake of 11 extra days driving availibility.

But with 12 months' tax plus refund you don't pay the extra £££ for a 6 month tax.. = cheaper overall.
