Car tax robbery by government

The crazy thing is that after next year when I stop having to pay the luxury subsidy to my road tax, my 5.0 V8 Mustang will cost the same amount to tax as my wife's super economical Mazda CX5. Both cost less than half what my S2000 was costing me.

An old Nissan Micra wasn't ULEZ but a Porsche 996 Turbo is :D
 
The goverment was always going to start charging the hybrid/electric cars when it came to car tax but the other rug pull is yet to come as it'll happen when enough people move to electric.

The goverment is not just going to give up on the money people have been paying per litre of fuel for decades.

Think of all the ex smokers no longer paying thousands in duty AND having the audacity of living a long retirement. Probably driving £20 a year diesels too :D
 
Where I live, a used G80 M3 is now €9,000 registration tax and about €1,500 a year.

Anything over 200g co2/km is literally thousands (and it’s exponential) if you want to register it.

In Denmark, tax can be up to 180% of thr car’s value, so you can do the maths.

Honestly £15 a month tax is pretty cheap :)

Your car would have had a much higher first year VED.

VED has been changed that most of the tax is now paid by the initial buyer for polluting vehicles.

Your S2000 wouldn't have had a special first year rate.

It's interesting that people still view VED as if it was pre-2017 where you pay the same rate since new.

All new cars since 2017:

Higher CO2 vehicles are also likely to be sportier cars paying the luxury vehicle surcharge for 5 years.

When I had my 996 turbo the road tax was very cheap for what it is, think maybe £160 a year but that was 6 or 7 years ago. I'm a bit outraged at the backdating of EV tax. I do own an EV, but if your going to backdate it for EVs, it should include other cars that put out far more rubbish (think bond villain smoke screen diesels).

Yeah, I don't think people realise how bad it is in Ireland to tax stuff, that's why I posted that table of the pricing...

The worse stuff is the imported, a £150K BNR34 V Spec II will cost you €54,000 to tax it! And that's just an old Nissan :P and a stock power one, imagine the cost of a tuned one!
It's why most Irish don't declare mods and risk it, and that is well known in the car scene, as I'm sure you know.

In Hong Kong you pay a 100% import duty on cars. Spendy.

My 2012 2.0 diesel pays £35 road tax, which is partly why I bought it.

Yeah, Yours will run out 2027 (My 2020 has the additional rate until April 2026), can't wait, my next tax in feb 2026 should just have 2 months pro-rata'd in and I'm looking forward to £195 tax!

It's a little bit sneaky in that it's 5 years after the initial first year, so technically 6 in total..

You do realise local roads are maintained by your local council and ‘road tax’ doesn’t ‘pay for roads’ right?

It’s just an other revenue source for the treasury.

Vehicle excise duty hasn't been ringfenced to road spending since the 1930s. You can thank Winston Churchill for that.
 
So very obvious question I would love any politician with a brain to answer. How can my daughter only pay £30 a year for road tax and I NOW have to pay £200 (thanks to the down right robbery of government) when we both have same size of engines i.e. 1ltr engines. To make it worse her car is old and my car is new .. therefore my omissions are much less. There is NO justification for this other than a blatant money making scheme. Shocking people are accepting this

If it makes you feel better, anyone who bought an EV in the last 8 years on the understanding that there was no VED is now also paying more than your daughter's £30, despite also having less emissions.

Because they change the approach every so often, and have decided it's fairer to let people who've bought a car on the basis of £30 per year road tax keep paying that rather than jacking theirs up to £200.

I'm puzzled as to why you think it would be fairer to make her pay £200 for a car she's already bought.

I disagree with that assessment, based on the fact that many people who bought a car on the basis of £0 per year road tax now have to pay almost £200.

In the bigger picture, car tax is a small amount and very trivial and not worth your time when compared to other taxes which are much more and you can actually do things to reduce how much you pay.

Compared to other taxes maybe, but VED is now more than I spend on fuel
