Much like many other people i'm sure, I intend to make my money go further when the new road tax bands come into place. I will refund what I currently have on my tax and then buy a new 12 month one before March 31st.

Question one is, i'm going to have to buy new tax in december, can I buy 6 months then and get a refund on that just as I would with 12 months?
Do you lose any money by getting a refund?

Do I have to declare the car SORN? What's the min. turn around time I can do it in?

Can't I get a refund on my disc, then while at the same post office counter buy a new one?

From official website:

A refund will only be paid if you’re the current registered keeper or the last registered keeper shown on the vehicle registration certificate (V5C).

Also, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) must have been told about any of the following changes:

* the vehicle has been sold, scrapped, exported or stolen
* you have made a SORN (statutory off road notification) and have not taxed the vehicle within 21 days of making the SORN
* the vehicle has been taxed in a nil value tax class, like the ‘Disabled’ tax class

Your application will be rejected and returned to you if you’re not able to satisfy the new rules and you haven’t told DVLA about any changes.

However, if your application is rejected, and you later supply information about any changes, a refund will be paid from the date the information is received at DVLA and not from the original date of application.

The 3 week gap is a bloody nuisance DESIGNED to annoy people into just paying the ridiculously high tax.

Sod it, I'll sorn mine for 3 weeks and use one of the other cars. I'm not getting out of saving my 200 quid :p

Although actually it's only 3 months tax I'll lose if I just dont bother claiming it back - which is what, 50 quid?

I honestly dont know how they work the refunds out, i once asked at the post office [who were clueless]!

Can you tax your car a month early without any issues?

Or do you have to SORN it then tax it again?

Annoyingly I taxed mine for 12 months a couple of months ago so it expires at the end of September 09 I think.

Not sure I can be bothered to mess about with this, the next renewal will be £300 and that'll take me well past when I plan on having the car.

Is this new tax malarky gonna make mine more expensive?

ive not looked into it.

It costs me 185 a month for mine.
