Ok, first things first, its done 103000 miles, and i havent had the 100000 mile service. Serves me right. Anyway, i set off today after doing 20+ miles, put it into first, up to 3000rpm (1.9 gt tdi, a little higher than i would normally change gears), put it into 2nd, released the clutch, accelerated, then something sounded like it snapped under the passenger side - definately at the front, under the bonnet. The car kept revving, but releasing the clutch makes a horrible grinding sound.

Anyway, an hour later my dad arrived to tow me to the garage - when he towed me, he said it was like i had the brakes on. Also, there was a terrible sound coming from the bonnet (same location it sounded like) of something scraping against the ground. I looked under the car and there was nothing scraping. I looked in the engine, not knowing much and it being dark i didnt see anything strange.

Any offers on what it might be? It still has the same feel to the clutch, it will 'engage' a gear but it grinds on release and it wont actually go forwards or backwards. There were no strange smells, like burning or anything.

Help :(

if you are in nutural with the clutch engaged does it still make a noise / feel stiff?

in neutral it makes no sound, even if i press in the clutch. towing in neutral made the clunking sound though.

car says no tbh :(

I think it may be the gear box too. Im thinking £300+ :(

CV joint shaft. That or the differential (which is built into your gearbox).

Take a torch and check the CV joint shaft, though. It'll be pretty obvious if it's snapped or the cups have separated.

could be cv joint as mickey d says, could be somethign simple too used to get a similar problem with the ren 19 16v i had. there is a circlip that goes into the diff, this regularly pops out and you loose all drive. Many garages will say the box is fubard. All you need to do is just replace the circlip and you get all drive again :/ think the clio 16v's suffer same problem

How do you know about things like that Mickey? You don't have FWD cars out there ;) :D

As much as I hate to admit it, 2/3 of what's in my drive is FWD!! :(
