Carabao Cup SF Football Thread ** spoilers ** [7th/8th Jan 5th/6th Feb 2025]

Well, it was far from pretty and if Arsenal could hit a barn door we might have been in trouble, but overall that was a tidy performance with some great defending.
The ref had an absolute shocker mind.
I was impressed with the defending. Robust in the face of the Arsenal quasi cheating. Good to see a team refusing to be bullied.
Eventually refs will start pulling them up on it and their set piece routine will fall to pieces. Most of their players in the box have zero intention of competing for the ball. They are blocking off defenders and the keeper and making it chaotic so that refs can’t point to an obvious foul easily.
Seems inevitable and fair. Whilst I think goalkeepers have been over protected at times, I'm not in favour of the tactics being employed.

Always nice to see Arteta lose. Hoping we can compound his displeasure on Sunday

Every single set piece and cross they're pushing our players and getting away with it. I bet Wenger is sick to his stomach every time he watches this version of Arsenal.
Isn't that from the Pep philosophy book? Foul as much as you can get away with

It’s hilarious that Chelsea preferred Cucurella over Lewis Hall
The same Cucurella that is the first choice left back for his country and who was ever present when Spain won the Euro's? Admittedly the fee paid was too high but it is what it is. Hall wasn't exactly a starter last season was he either? It seemed Dan Burn was playing left back instead of him sometimes from the Newcastle games I saw.

From what I know his whole family are Newcastle fans and he wanted to go. From a PSR perspective he was pure profit. Unlike Mount I don't believe he downed tools and I wish him and Tino all the best at Newcastle. Hopefully they both get a chance on the International stage next. But yeah hilarious.

I can't believe he blamed the ball.

That's something like Klopp would say. At least with Klopp a part of me honestly thought he was just having a laugh...

It's more an admission in failure of preparation than solely blaming the ball?
As a newcastle fan pointed out though that game was considerably closer than score shows and seriously bad finishing has left the result like that. Arteta is still a football terrorist though
We kicked a lot of balls over the bar, and it's tricky that these balls fly a lot so there's details that we can do better

If Klopp said it they would have changed the ball for the rest of the competition
We'd be playing in domes with 1230 kickoffs outlawed if that was remotely true :D

Oh if Arsenal could have hit the back end of a barn door last night they could have won the game. Their xG was nearly 4 but their xGOT was about 0.8. Thats some shocking lack of quality.

xGOT = xG for your shots that are on target?

Didn't realise they were nearly at 4 xG, thats wildly bad finishing with that ball. We need it in the PL

The expected goals from what you actually made of your xG. So if a keeper has an worldie or lets in some shockers the xGOT could be wildly different from the actual goals. I would love to know what the xG of Master Havertz shoulder shot was.
