Was in a restaurant today and when going to pay my card declined, i have money in the account and it was definitely the right pin. (luckily i had another card with me)

The restaurant was not in my home town as we took a trip out do you think this is why it could have been declined?

I would ring the bank but i cba at the moment i hate banks  if i did ring them could they tell me why im not allowed to spend my own money?

Max daily withdrawal/spend limit? Unlikely it'll be because you were away from home. Only if the transaction's in Morrocco an hour after you used it at a Tesco Express in Slough do they raise an eyebrow (for debit cards - my business credit card is ridiculously tight, I pretty much get a call every time I spend online).

It sounds like it could've been an error with the system. How many times did they run the card?

Perhaps it was a card that the restaurant doesn't take but the member of staff that served you didn't realise. Alternatively, your bank might've blocked the payment for security reasons as they might've had reports of fraud in that area/at that establishment (I think they can do this, not sure though).

the bank might have thought it was a dodgy transaction and stopped it.

i went to the cinemas before and my card got declined. called my bank and they said they stopped it because the vendor name was unusual or something and just incase it was a fraudulent transaction.. (even though the value was less than a tenner?)

If it was a portable (hand held) terminal then your card might have declined it if it couldn't connect to the network/merchant

EDIT

(even though the value was less than a tenner? )

And don't forget this is how most accoutn clearings begin, mobile phone voucher for a tenner to check the account works then it gets humped

It was just a Visa Debit card so i assume they take that?

I hadnt used the card all day so couldnt of maxed out.

They are prob out spending my monies now after cloning my card :P

Meh i wanted to changed banks anyway

What can often happen is some companies never refer for authorisation - they just automatically decline. It means that they can avoid having to phone banks and the whole process.

I got my card declined for about £10 the other week again in Korea much to my rage at HSBC. I've complained on here before about them going nuts because i travel so much.

The next week I cleared the finance on my car (12 grand) over the phone on my switch card and they didnt even call to check.

£10 in pizza hut = 5min security call in korea costing me about £10 in gobal roaming charges

£12k no card present sale = Nothing....

Bank card security is just crazy

Similar thing here.
Paid out £2,500 online = nothing. Next payment is the regular payment I'd been making on the same day, for the same amount, to the same people for 5 years = declined

HSBC also always call me when i order from OCUK, or spend money on xbox live or steam.

I can see OCUK being classed as high risk (high value products that can be resold rather than anything wrong with OCUKs site) and I guess people often use stolen cards on live or steam.

Lloyds take issue with me using my card online all the time, but at least let me use it after I phone and complain, at least, they do the second time I phone and complain. I've never had to phone them up a third time in a row to allow a transaction through.

I've had a couple of friends have their M&S credit cards actually cancelled for ordering online, usually from OCUK. I heard one of my friends at work having a go at them for it just the other day "Yes, that was me, yes that was my transaction to, and yes, that was mine as well. WHAT?! What do you mean you sitll have to cancel the card, I just confirmed every single transaction!" he was not impressed and has now transferred to a different card. :)

Since my ATM card got scammed (ie. account emptied) in Indoesia recently, I've had no end of trouble withdrawing from ATM Machines.

Tried to withdraw last week in Singapore = declined. Tried to withdraw yesterday in Malaysia = declined :(

Been declined recently whilst getting petrol at a garage, most embarrasing. I had to go back and pay it later, for some reason my bank decided to block "pin services" without telling me. Thanks Abbey/Santander. Be easier shoving money under a matress the hassle I've had with these guys.

Bank card security is just crazy

Tell me about it..
I mean i often buy stuff online so i guess they are used to it for me making regular transactions. But i didn't tell them i was going on holiday to Hong Kong, and the first time i used my card was for £250 in-store 4 weeks into the hol, and again £200 in store a week later. A phone call? Of course not.

I guess £250 is not a lot for them, but it's a reasonable amount for the type of customer i am (student with not that much money) to warrant a phone call? And this was using a debit card. So question, if it was fradulent, and i didn't realise until maybe 2 weeks later, would i be able to get my money back?

Only time ive ever had fraud on my cards was while they had already been stopped.

Longtime ago i was in Vietnam with work (2003 i think), after about 3 months in a 4* hotel i had to pay the bill (strangly they let me run up 3 months worth of bill without touching my card) they declined my HSBC Visa card, but fortunatly accepted my HSBC mastercard. ON THE SAME ACCOUNT (hsbc used to do a combined 2 card one statement thing). Lucky escape i thought as if i hadnt been able to pay i didnt fancy staying in the other Hanoi Hilton.

Anyway I got to the airport and while paying the ticket adjustment fees ($100) they stopped my mastercard as well leaving me cardless. I used my last $100 cash to pay the fees and flew home with a 8 hour lay over in bangkok with no money to even buy a drink and no lounge access.

When I got back i had a chat with HSBC and they applogised and couldnt really explain their strange actions but i let it drop, afterall i had just hit my card with a huge amount so it must have looked abit weird.

2 Months later i got a $300 charge from bangkok airport on my Visa card which was already frozen when i was in Thailand so never even left my wallet, to this day i don't know why or how but in the end i got the money back, took so long phone calls to card services though.

i had my card declined last week when buying a car, called the bank who said they hadnt recevied any authorisation request, turns out it was a fault with the machine
