Card for 1280x1024?

looking for a graphics card that can play games like L4D, COD4, Supreme commander on max settings at 1280x1024. Im not really sure what would be the best bet, is a 4870 overkill at this res? The cheaper the better really as ive just started uni but completely fed up having to use a geforce 6500. Happy to buy 2nd hand as well
