I am looking to update my three year old build so I can use it properly with Oculus Rift (Project Cars 2) and 4K (Forza Horizon 4 + others)

I've got a 4970 CPU with a GTX 970 at the moment. I don't really want to spend as much as the 2080 TI is at the moment, so I was thinking either 1080 TI or 2080. There isn't much difference in price (or performance judging from comments here).

Would both of these do what I am looking for, or is it worth saving for the 2080 TI?

I was in exactly the same boat. (Only coming from a 980) I did have a 2080ti on order however I decided this is NOT the generation to go big. Tough call between the 2080 or the 1080ti imo both almost on a par in traditional games, 2080 has rtx/dlss but 1080ti has more memory and is £120-£150 cheaper.

I chose the 1080ti as it's an interim upgrade for me.... IF you want an upgrade to last through not only the 20 series but beyond maybe the 2080 will be better?

It's a guessing game right now. I want to see what 7nm refresh brings to the table in 12onths or so before I splunk 1k+ on a gpu!
