Instead of resurrecting my old thread when I had only £130 to spend. I can now stretch to £200.

So my PC is...

"Ultima Viper" Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4.00Gz
Asus Rampage II Extreme Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

It still works and I only really play WOW.

What would be a good upgrade on the 6870...got a feeling that won't be difficult.

I'd love to run WOW on Ultra @ 1920 x 1200 @ 60fps but understand that is a tall order.

A GTX 970 was originally suggested but only if 'they were fixed' ... I'm quite out of the loop so no idea what they referred to, cheapest one so far is £260 anyhoo.

FYI I do not have access to member sales section of this forum.

Cheers

Wal

I've got a 760 and it maxed wow no probs at 1080 before the patch. Even in raids. I haven't tried cranking the AA up since 6.1 landed but I'd imagine it would be fine.

You don't necessarily have to go all the way up to a 290 / 970 for WoW.

I know a friend with an R9 280 seems OK with the game. The GTX960 prices seem to be dropping to £150 and under - the Nvidia cards do tend to do a bit better in the game performance wise when compared to equivalent AMD ones AFAIK.There are a few B-Grade GTX770 cards for £150 in the clearance section, although I am not sure if the MSI ones are worth going for.

Should be noted that last weeks patch saw the additions of HBAO+, SSAA/MSAA (and with MSAA the ability to enable MFAA) and built in DSR. So maxing WoW at ultra is harder today than a week ago.

Not sure if WOW favours nvidia or amd but might be worth checking out some WOW forums for a bit more detail. As for the best card if alls equal then I'd say the best card for £200 right now is the R9 290 if you can accept the heat and noise. If not try and stretch the budget to a GTX 970 (albeit a fair bit more). If you want something a little cheaper then a 280X would be a good choice. Personally I think the GTX 960 is a poor card and expensive for what it is.

lol ikr wow iirc is lmao rofl hard 2 run.

//I dunno. Imma stop typing now :eek::D

Cheers so far.....Looks like I have 2 contenders which seem very close in performance, the only clear delimiter seems to be that the GTX is significantly less hungry, hot and noisy...

Cheapest GTX is £257 - most expensive £329 (excluding the built to order). That's a massive variation. is there something I'm not getting..is the £257 sub-standard?

This 290 looks good though. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-133-GI&tool=3

I have a 290 and I could max it but I can't max it now, I also had a 970.
I have everything on ultra but have to turn down AA a bit.
In all honesty the 970 did seem a bit smoother and the colours were a bit different.
But I prefer the 290 with 4gb of vram :) Providing your PSU can take it.
I'm at 1080p btw.
But you will be happy with either card compared to your 6870.
