Card ok in DOS not in windows

Just put a low bid on a R9 270x series card on an auction site that listed as working in dos but not in Windows, in the hope that the user is being silly or it's an easy fix.

What say you, am I likely to be able to get it working?

I had a Radeon 2900 which died in a similar way. Would show post screen ok and boot to windows with standard VGA driver 640x480, but as soon as the driver installed screen just went black with maybe a line running through the middle, totally unusable (tested in different pcs and different vga bios versions)

50/50 really - could be their inexperience or it could be failing video memory. Its possible its "fixable" with a reflow but it might be a total bust.
