on overclockers door step
Got an 8800GT this week having traded up from an 8600GT. I was expecting it to be a bit better than it is but I can't see a great deal of difference from my old card. I'm getting about 10 fps more than I was before. I've seen people with the same card posting on here who are getting up to 80fps on the fur benchmark. Is this lack of performance down to my processor (I've got a 4000+ AMD Athlon dual core), something to do with the card or just something I'm not doing right? (By the way I don't really want to change the processor from an AMD cos I've not long bought my new board)

A hunch its got something to do with the AMD Athlon
That wouldn't be Athlonimation now would it?

Have a run of 3D Mark 2006 and tell us your CPU and graphics scores.

Thats a pretty slow CPU by current standards....
you are gonna be CPU limited....

Get a cheap C2D MOBO combo & overcock it to death :D

Neocon: 1280 + 1024 I've got a 19 inch monitor.
Tetras: on 3dmark 06 total Score 7648/SM 2.0 Score 3317/SM 3.0 Score 4002/ CPUScore 1585.

That is the reason. 1280x1024 will be bottlenecked by your CPU. You should learn how to overclock and boost that CPU up. If you can get to 2.6Ghz to 3Ghz then that should release more of the card for you.

You could always get a bigger screen, or go for an Intel setup which would be about £50 for the motherboard, £50 for a E2180/E2200 which should overclock to 3Ghz which is turn about 3.4Ghz to your AMD CPU @ 3Ghz and £30 for RAM. £130 total.

I'd still try and overclock that CPU for now, see how it improves things for you. If you can't get much out of your CPU in overclocking then you may have to spend some cash. Good luck.

Sound advice.

I run rig in sig but at 1900x1200 on 24" monitor with no problems. Granted the gpu is overclocked slighty too.

Try not to get too hung up on benchmarks...games are what count. I only get about 11k in 3d06 which is a lot less than same card with an intel cpu BUT i can keep up with them in the crysis benchmark and even beat a few :)

As already said get the cpu to above 2.4GHz and that will stop it holding back the card.
