i'm looking at jumping ship on IT. My normal working day is 13/14 hours long and i spend all my spare time studying (degree, MCSE and sitting my CCNA soon) but i'm finding it difficult to even find a job in london after being screwed by my last few employers (job history on my CV is shocking :(). i've had 4 jobs (all perm) this year if you include the one that screwed me at the last minute and left me unemployed.

i've decided to broaden my search but i have no idea of what i'm looking for  all i know is its got to be challenging, fun and have long term goals.

i have no other commitments so i can commit as much time and effort as need be to succeed.

I've been wanting out of IT since I accidently got into it 11 years ago!!
I have never had the balls to make the break and start again - I have 3 options open to me....get my Audio Engineering / Recording Arts degree and go into Audio work (which I was working towards when I got into IT), join the Police (wanted to do that as a kid before getting into Music) or get certied as a Scuba Diving instructor...... you never know I might think about it again next year (or not!!)

If you have options open to you, you owe it to yourself to try. Don't get stuck 11 years later thinking 'what if'???

Good idea. You might have been unlucky but more likely you didn't have what it takes.

i'm thinking unlucky, IT has always come naturally to me. Each job i've had never turned out to be what i actually applied for and now i'm finding it hard to get interviews purely because of my cv.The interviews i do get either say someone with more experience got it (fair enough) or for the lower end roles i get told i'm too technical and wont stay there long enough to be worth employing

i looked into diving ive have always wanted to do it. becoming an instructor is only way forward as apparantly becoming a commercial diver theres just no money in it and conditions are pretty bad.

i'm not after reasons for or against me leaving IT, i'm after help finding ideas for a new career path

surely if you love IT you wont care for lucky breaks..

what is a lucky break.. more money?

I think if you loved something you carry on regardless

money has never been my goal and i've always made that clear, i earnt enough to live ok. the problem is with the roles i get given being too basic, not challenging enough, not enough progression and not providing me with training they've promised. my key hate is being bored or having nothing to do.

by lucky break i mean a job that i enjoy and provide me with a solid challenging career progression

13/14 hours?

What sort of IT is that? IT is quite broad really.

I work for a hedge fund and work strictly 7.5 hours a day doing really interesting and challenging work, directly with the business.

Perhaps it's not a change out of IT, but a change within IT, or perhaps the type of company you "do IT" for which is needed?
