I stood on one of the bottom treads of my staircase a couple of days ago and heard a crack. It feels spongy now and I think the tread has come away from the riser (I think it's called a kite step). It's enclosed so I can't access it from underneath.

I've rung several carpenters and had one quote back so far but it seems expensive to me so I'd just like to check if it is the going rate and what I should be expecting to pay to have it repaired. They guy said it was an easy fix as they get them all the time but he's quoted me £500 to have it done. I understand I'll have to pay to have it done properly but I was thinking it would be about the £250 - £300 mark. I'll wait until I have a couple more quotes though before proceeding but would be nice to know what people's thoughts are on the price.

Was he planning to replace the whole tread? Or did the quote not go into much detail? Also what is your treads made from?

No idea, quote just mentioned price for materiels and labour. House was built in 1995 so not sure what treads are made of.

Ahh 1995 so probably not solid wood. I would have thought under £200 tbh most of that being his time maybe a morning / afternoon. Maybe i am being optimistic?

I think traders seem to be able to price jobs to whatever they want in the current climate. Apologies for not adding much of value to the thread but I've had my fair share of issues with the 'trades' in recent times.

I agree, had a crazy few quotes for a small extension 8m2 roughly which was nuts and didn't included a new kitchen included. I am not sure who is paying these prices tbh, the middle/upper class?
