What's the best/cheapest way of cleaning carpets?
Front hallway really needs doing, absolutely reeks (cat's been territorial and sprayed all over it by the front door)

Rug Doctor is what you want as it does a cracking job! Cost me £35 to hire from Morrisons over the weekend and included a 2 litre bottle of cleaning fluid and all attachments. This did two medium sized bedrooms, hall, stairs and landing and I still had quite a bit of cleaning fluid left over.

You'll be shocked at the muck that it lifts from the carpet when emptying the waste container.

It worked a treat for us and brought the carpets up as new, same with friend's and family's. If the carpets are that bad, like you're suggesting, then I can only think that they are past the point of no return and it's time to buy new.

Ah man :/

Was hoping there'd be a cheaper option than to hire equipment. Well, I've gone out and bought a bunch of carpet cleaning products (1001 carpet shampoo, neutradol odour eliminating powder stuff and this foam that you spray all over the affected areas).

I'm hoping those, and a lot of elbow grease will do a decent enough job. Carpet was in a state when I moved in anyway tbf.

Cheers for the suggestions though I'll keep them in mind for the next time the little git decides to "this is mine, and this is mine, and this is mine" my house :p

Well, I just spent £6, so hopefully that cheap :p

The problem is though, scrubbing it won't remove a lot of muck, the machine will suck up the fluid, giving you tank after tank of brown water... it really Is eye opening how much filth they remove, even from a carpet that 'looks' clean.

Agree with the above, hard work and bottled products will not work if its that bad. Also not all cleaning solutions will break down urine. Rug doctor actually have a special one just for this.

Rent the Rug Doctor you tight git.

We use the cleaning fluid from the Kirby Carpet Cleaners and it works a treat.

£35 is quite reasonable for a cleaner, not sure how much you were expecting them to be?!!

+1 here for the rug doctor, when i moved into the flat the carpets was awful, one weekend with the rug doctor later and the carpets looked like there original colour again!!

seeing this thread has made me want to give the carpets another go with the rug doctor.

We bought a VAX carpet cleaner for £150 about 2 years ago, so far nothing has withstood it's cleaning powers. To be fair I didn't expect it to be that good but it brings them back to life too. Carpets all get done every few months or when there's a spill, but definately worth having :)
