Carpet + Plastering price (roughly)

Don't need exact figures but just curious if someone happens to know the rought price of

a) getting some new cheap carpet (floorboards atm so need underlay and it fitted)

and

b) replastering 4 walls

oh and while im at it

c) getting artec removed or plasters/skimmed or whatever on the celling

in a room thats roughly 4m * 4m.

I paid a friend £300 for a room of similar size, he had to go over artex on the ceiling which he didnt recomend but i told him to do it anyway :)

Do as much prep work as you can to keep the price down, PVA'ing etc....

Carpet i havent a clue and need to do the same now :)
 
I don't think your supposed to pva the wall if its being skimmed, although i could be wrong.

My mate paid £200 for a carpet in a similar sized room. But with carpet you get what you pay for and a cheap carpet wont last long.

I think it depends on how dry the wall is, i guess the last thing you want is a dry wall sucking all the water out of the plaster making it dry to quickly.

I could be wrong as i know very little about plastering :)

Pva/unibond everything that you think might not provide a good key for the plaster or is of questionable surface adhesion (woot technical), like old smooth and shiny paint. Also pva/unibond is good to use to seal a wall that might dry your plaster too fast. As long as the artex is sound and not pulling away from the plasterboard/laths behind, rub down/knock off any bobbles, unibond and skim as normal.

Plaster drying time for a unibonded/pva'd wall is longer than normal. You can paint plaster that isnt 100% dry as long as you use regular watered down non vinyl imulsion, but personally I would wait until it is 100% dry before moving any furniture in, doing any wood work etc.

iv just been quoted £80 for a guy to supply the underlay (cloud9 stuff) door strips and strips that hold the carpet in place. then lay the carpet i supply which i thought wasnt bad.
 
Ah, okay those prices are a lot better than I was expecting. Thought plastering would be more like £600-£800.

Its still all wallpapered so I don't know the condition of the wall behind yet. Probably strip it in 2 weeks or so during the school easter holidays. Then once if its bad enough will *try* and get Sovereighn to do the plastering (we rent) but if it just needs touching up they will force us to do it ourselves.

As for carpet how much does that cost nowerdays? Just for a single plain, not thick carpet? (again very roughly).

Oh and as far as waiting for it all to dry out etc thats not a problem in the slightest its only my bedroom so if it takes 4 or so days then so be it, really not an issue :)

If you rent i would check your contract and not go ripping down wallpaper without asking.

I would say try get the best underlay you can afford, makes your carpet feel much much better!
 
if someone asks me to cover an artex ceiling i will overboard it and skim, does a much better job.

if you have to skim over artex or existing plaster instead of using PVA use thistle bond-it, sticks really well and has a grit in it to provide a key

Yup, the HSE has recently decided that the 0.1 % asbestos contained within artex is enough to class it as a dangerous substance, so if it's removed it's got to be done properly :(

Like I said that's not a problem in the slighest. Forces the hand of the rent people if that's the case :)

As far as I know it's not illegal for the artex to be there, but it would be costly to remove. Your landlord will be under no obligation to replace anything.

Our house is due for certain decorations etc from Sovereign but it takes 1-4years to get them done. But something like asbestos, or just me simply starting a job and it turning out to be more than cosmetic will get them to do it asap.

For example, if the plastering was in awfull state they will come out in 0-6months. But they won't do things like wallpaper etc.

Removing the 'asbestos' properly will cost them a great deal of money though and would be totally unnecessary - good luck with getting them to do that.
