Carpet protector/mat recommendations?

Had this issue when my lad wanted a gaming chair in his bedroom. In the end I went to b&q and bought a 150cmx100cm piece of MDF and glued some spare 50x50 carpet tiles on. To make it look a bit fancy, I had a leftover LED strip which I stuck round the edges. Looks good and cost peanuts.

The simplest of ideas are always the ones overlooked, great idea and looks good

How is the carpet underneath over time? Wouldn't the pile end up all squished?

How thick is the MDF? Any risk of stubbing toes on the edges?! Great idea though, sounds simple to implement!

I can't remember now, maybe 12mm will check if you like

Carpet seems fine underneath

I've got a polycarbonate chair mat with the little spikes and it's been great for the last 4 years.
There are some cracks in it now but doesn't affect the chair movement.
Was about £45 for a 70x100 mat and the carpet underneath after 3 years was depressed but soon recovers. More marks left from desks and cupboards that were in place.
Had bought a cheaper run of the mill chair mat prior and those are just too flexible and end up forming groves and dips which stop the chair from moving.

The MDF and carpet is nice idea if you've got the scraps although I imagine it's quite a lip and running off the edge or moving the chair about the room is no fun. I'm sure my kids and others not used to it would trip over it, and whilst falling over grab the headphone cable which will yank everything off the desk.

I've never used one, same carpet for about 10 years.
No hole worn in the carpet, just a circle that's lighter colour than the rest of the carpet, it doesn't even look like it's crushed down it's just a faded circle.
