A fun subject...

I've never really touched the carpets in my house other than the usual hoover since moving in and have no idea how old they are. It's now got to the point where they look a little rough/dated etc

Short of having new carpets everywhere which i guess would be > £1000, has anyone either purchased a steam cleaner and had good results or paid a company to come in and steam clean them? Is it worth doing over saving for new ones?

There's plenty on Amazon from £40-200 and I'm not sure what a company might cost to come in and blitz them.

Thanks for any advice!

Pay for someone to do it.

It'll be a better job
It'll be drier than if you did it
It'll be quicker
You won't have a cheap steam cleaner cluttering up the place for you to stub your toe on for the next 4 years till you decide to use it again and it doesn't work any more and you skip it and start the process all over again.

Not a steam cleaner, but I got a Vax carpet cleaner a few years ago and it has more than paid for itself (less than £200). Does a good job of the carpets, totally dry within the day.

£30-40 to hire a rug doctor for a weekend from most supermarkets.

You probably won't get as good a result as a pro with an industrial machine, but it'll cost you a fraction of that!

Just done 1 bedroom and a few large rugs. The difference is like night and day. The only difficult bit are the edges of the rugs, had to use the upholstery kit for that. Hired a rug doctor kit from Tesco, £23 for the unit and the £12 for the shampoo. Took me around 3hrs to do a 14x14ft bedroom carpet and 3 X rugs around 5x8ft, though I did one rug about 7 times in total as it was filthy and a candidate for disposal, we're keeping it now though as its like new.
