Cartax - about time.

quick question about the "first year rate"

if i buy a 2006 golf R32 in May 2017, the first year rate would be £1,120 then £515 yearly after that

is that right?

No, it only counts for cars first registered after April 2017, a 2006 car will be whatever the current band is.

Glad I ordered my Jag now rather than later. £30 tax just now compared with £490 after 1st April... :D

I wonder how long this is going to last for, to me it doesn't make sense from an emissions point of view. For people who would have bought a car with low emissions to save money on tax might as well just buy a higher powered car that pollutes more but cost the same in tax a year.

It is more likely to make me go and buy a car that was £300 a year to tax, instead of a car that was £30, as I am "Saving" £160 instead of "Spending" £110 a year.

In a way it could be a good thing for me, as I am more likely to own a sporty petrol instead of my chuggy diesel.

But sucks for people who bought performance cars already. Now the tax will be cheaper long term :(

Tbf, building them better means they last longer, rather than the current crop of tiny engine mahoosive turbo diesels that are computerised completely that'll do 100k then bam the turbos gone or the electrics bug out and the whole thing gets scrapped.

This is why I've gone back to a non-turbo. Eventually they do go bang (especially on diesels it seems) and almost all current cars seem to have them :/

Yep, and is only going to hurt them further in resale value, when in a few years time you can buy a newer second hand car with cheaper tax

Dealers can register a car even if the owner doesn't physically take delivery until some time after it...
